Well, it is all finally done!
The UK's first F3N competition held at the BMFA Nationals was seriously hampered by the terrible weather which sat over Barkston Heath for the entire weekend (until about 30 minutes after we left the site, of course!).
The competitors faced extremely windy conditions in which to fly our light 3D helicopters, but we persevered.
Saturday had strong winds and some heavy showers through the day, so we got very little flying done at all.
The F3N competition was scheduled to start on Sunday morning, which it did, eventually, after a long delay waiting for a slight lull in the wind. It wasn't going to happen so we just got on with it, and boy was it hard work!
Everyone flew very well considering the conditions, but it was pretty bad, so we decided to hold off the freestlye round until today (Monday).
Monday morning we gathered at the flightline to find clear blue skies and fluffy clouds above us, but still a pretty strong wind, so after the Scale guys had done some flying we got on with the Freestyle round of the competition. The wind had moved around to be coming from the front left of the pilots, which isn't ideal, but once again, everyone put on a good show and we rattled through the pilots.
And so the first ever British National Champion has been recorded...the next step is to build a British National team that we can send abroad to compete against other countries in a World Championship competition!
The final results (top 3) were as follows:
1. Duncan Osbourn, Trex 700
2. Peter Ayriss, Trex 600
3. Rob Turnbull, Avant Aurora
This was the first year that an F3N event has taken place, and was a low key affair, but the crowd line on Sunday really blew me away with the number of people and cars watching the goings on.
We will be running the competition at the Nats again next year, and with a lot more publicity to get the event bigger, it should be another great event on the 3D heli pilots calendar.
Thanks to all that attended, to all the spectators, to the Judges (Nigel Fraser Ker, Simon Brown and Mat Watkin), and to the BMFA and the AHA for making it happen.
I'm sure pictures and videos will make it online before too long
Cheers,
Rob
