  • 20% Nitro Limit

    Hi All,

I thought it best to post a question here rather than the original thread.

GravityKills, you mentioned a 20% nitro limit in F3C but I can't find reference to it in the FAI Sporting Code. Did I just miss it?

I only ask as I want to do some F3C/Sportsmans next year and I'm in the process of deciding whether to go nitro or electric and a nitro % limit may effect my decision.

There is not limit on the amount of Nitro allowed.

Some countries do have limits. I think that Japan has either a 15 or 20% limit but that is an internal affair not an international one!

Hope to see you at the comps soon

Yes, I think the information I gave earlier was inaccurate. I also thought that low-smoke fuel would be mandatory, but I guess that isn't true either.

On the web page of the European championships in July you can order 30 % nitro fuel, low smoke or not. I guess they wouldn't offer it for sale if it weren't allowed to be flown.

To be certain, one would have to find and check all amendments to the sporting code.

Lots of things get talked about and even proposed to the FAI but things like this are so difficult to police that they become unworkable.

It also puts people off and can even make is more expensive for people to compete so we try not to vote on rules like this!

Good news for me, since my fingers are itching to get a .90 nitro heli for F3C.
Probably it's a myth. But at least here up north, it's one that is widely spread. I wonder, why else would the LHS stock low-smoke fuel - and even tell me I can't use anything else in competitions.

OK I was searching fai.org and found nothing.
What I did find is that Steve is the UK member of the CIAM F3 Heli subcommittee
Conclusion: See above, there is no limit.

I would pick a nitro engine that runs smoothly.
My own YS 91 SR with Hatori muffler (edit: Hatori SB 19 FH) has loads of power for 3D, but this combination wouldn't be my first choice for F3C. If in doubt, pick something that's being used by others.

Your choice of power plant is massively important.

It needs to be reliable, smooth but not necessarily the most powerful thing in the world but its nice if it is!

I had many problems with OS's back in the C spec and C spec PS days and went YS. What a difference that made. Never had a problem again.

When you look at the World Champs report in the Jap mags they normally have an equipment list used by all of the pilots at the event. 75%+ use YS (not so true now that electric is becoming popular).

I have used both the 91ST and 91SR and found that both run very smoothly, are constant on mixture (set it and leave it!) and have good power.

Just make sure that you pick the right exhaust for your motor. The Ideal F3C muffler for the 91SR is the Hatori 995.

                      Tony

I always ran my YS on Bekra 20%. Seemed happy and looked brand new inside when apart for its yearly bearing change.

Mark Christy used the same fuel but you do see various fuels being used.

Dave Fisher used Optifuel, but lots of international pilots use CoolPower and the Japs use Japanese fuel.
