Hi All
Just a short report on the Vic State Champs held at the beginning of November at the State flying field north of Melbourne.
There were 18 entries and these all split evenly with 6 in novice, 6 in advanced and 6 in F3C. The majority of entries were from Victoria, but we also had pilots drive down from Brisbane, Sydney and Canberra. Out of the 18, there were two nitro models, one of which was mine. The models entered were Trex700e/n, JR Sylphide E12, Hirobo Freya electric, Quest Impaction and one Goblin 700.
The Quest Impaction was most prominent and all but one were in Staysee bodies. There were a couple of Trex700e's in Super Gracy bodies and the rest were P&B.
Novice is purely hovering with pilots having to perform maneuvers such as a vertical rectangle and circle tail in.
Advanced is a little more involved with side on hovering which include a vertical rectangle with pirouettes, inverted triangle with pirouettes and a vertical circle. The aerobatic maneuvers consisted of loop, slow roll (3sec), stall turn, vertical pushover and a straight line 45 deg auto.
The F3C pilots flew the current FAI schedule.
Next year the schedules will change with the addition of a new class, Expert. The idea is to make the transition to more complicated aerobatics easier.
I was in Advanced. The first time I flew the schedule was at a club comp in August. Unfortunately, the weather and mechanical issues meant I only got a couple of days in which to practice.
The comp kicked off on the Saturday. We had blue skies, light winds and temps in the late 20's. The novice round was flown first followed by advanced and then F3C. This was to allow the sun to be out of the flight line for the aerobatics. The wind picked up a bit as the day went on and also became variable which caught some guys out in the auto's, me included.
By the end of the day, all classes had flown 3 rounds and the scores were posted. There were no mishaps except the other nitro 700 which lost the muffler and subsequently retired. We had hoped to fly a fourth round on Sunday, but the weather took a turn for the worse with high winds and rain. Therefore the previous day's results stood and prize-giving was done. I was pleased and surprised to see I had placed 3rd in advanced. It was also good to see a nitro model holding its own against the electrics. The pilot with the Goblin 700 won advanced and this was down to his aerobatics which were very precise.
The FAI class was won by the reigning Aus number 1, Marc Swan flying his new JR 800 size Sylphide.
The comp was an enjoyable experience and I am now looking towards the Aus nationals in January. I have also decided that I will need to get an electric model and am currently considering a Quest Impaction. I will keep the 700n for practicing.

are you enjoying your time down under.
I'm surprised to hear there were no Rave ENVs as they were probably the most popular over here last season. I don't see the Quests over here at all, probably because no shops are stocking them and everything would have to come from RC Japan. Hirobos are getting scarce here as well.
