  • Syma 603 (kids toy) yes I know

    Hi everybody

Bought the syma 603 for my 12 year old, I know nothing about RC helis but thought this would be a good start for him, have managed to stop it rotating left or right and it does just what it says on the box, rises up and turns left or right, but it goes in whichever direction the air is going. Excuse me for asking this probably stupid question so I apologise in advance.

If I were to add a small weight to the front of it, would this make it go forward? Or have you any other ideas?

    cheers

    Pete

I think that would do it, yes.
Start off with very small amounts of weight and work your way up to a desired forward speed.
Try to keep the weight on the centreline of the helicopter - on the nose would be good.
Bear in mind that you don't have cyclic control once flying, so to avoid hitting walls you will need to steer it with the rudder.
    Good luck!
    Cheers,

Isn't that the big (ish) outdoor 2 channel jobby that they sell in Maplins? If so unfortunately although it's an outdoor you do need an exceptionally calm day to fly them, I bought the 3 ch 9081 as my first big(ish) heli and still have her flying today. Well, the second one is, the first one went over the rooftops on her first outing. Came with that dreadful sinking feeling, so don't fly in 'any' wind at all, as being only 2 channel you have even less control.

        Hi guys

Thanks for the quick reply. I guess it must be 2 channels cos it goes up and rotates left or right and for the kind of money (39 quid) I paid for it, I guess that's what it's supposed to do. I (we) just want to have some sort of control so that it goes forward. Where I am I've got loads of open space so I've no concerns about going over roofs or hitting walls. Already tried it in a light breeze and it just goes where it wants to go so landed it quickly but at least I can turn it left or right!! Will try the small weight on the nose.

        Thanks again

        Cheers

            Hi Andy

Been here for 13 years in Salalah working for Royal Air Force Oman (RAFO) on contract teaching bagpipes and drums, beats working for a living!!!! What did you make of the place? Where did you get to etc? Hope you had a good time, sorry that we didn't meet sooner, could have shown you all the local haunts. Did you get to the Oasis and meet Cyril??

            Cheers

Bloody hell,Small world or what. Was also working for RAFO on their Lynx helis but I work for Westlands.
Got up to the Oasis a lot for eats and drinks and free pool and saw alot more of the place this time because last year when I was there it was the Kareef.
I like Salalah myself but alot of the people over here think its a bit of a dump but where I have stayed on both ocasions at the Crown Plaza its pretty dam good but bloody pricey.
There is talk I might be back there in July/August time.

Flamin hell, can't believe we didn't meet up, we were here in the Khareef at the same time as you. We frequent the oasis a lot!!! We know a lot of the Westland guys? Did you meet Robbie Wardrope (avionics) a good mate of ours? He's been here for a lot of years as well, should have Omani citizenship (who would want it??). Lovely people but shouldn't work with them.

Wondering whether we've actually met here but don't recognise your name, perhaps you were in a group of Westland guys. Jo (my wife) and I and of course our kids Kris and Calllum were there too, maybe we would have met sometime. Strange world, and quite spooky, who would have thought over a small problem such as helicoopter pitch would have brought us here tonight and met a person who has come to the back of beyond and we only just joined tonight.

                  Cheers

When I was there last year I was in Salalah a few days only and on my own and spent more time in Muscat.
Last month when I was there I got out and about alot more because I had more free time.
You must know Brian Hunter,Steve,Larry and one other guy but I just cant think of his name right now who all work on the Lynx,Also met up with a guy called Patrick and his missus but he has only been there since christmas.

Know this isn't too much to do with this thread any more and am quite happy to email privately if that's better. Yes know Brian Hunter and Steve, not sure on Larry though and Patrick of course isn't known to us we've been away since xmas. We're soon to move to Muscat too so any time you're visiting Salalah or passing through Muscat you'll know where to call.

Feel free to email privately as I know this post is now becoming irrelevant to pitch!!!! hahahaha

                      Cheers
