Well I crashed my heli a few weeks ago and today did my first spin up after fixing it.
Once upon a time, in a galaxy far far ...... well you know the rest
I initially thought I had just broke the main blades, as I couldn't see anything else wrong.
I didn't have any spares so ordered them, when they came I fitted them and went for a test spin up.
(insert dramatic music) It nearly shook its self to bits. So looking on this forum and other places thought it was just the blades needed tracking.
It didn't as I tried but it didn't help. Back on the forum I read a few posts about what was likely to be damaged if the blades were.
Had a good look and found that the Main shaft, flybar, feathering spindle and paddles were broken or twisted. (see attached)
Well back on the internet to order paddles as I had a spare flybar and main shaft. (learning I ordered spares)
(dramatic music again) Went outside to spin it up, It sat there spinning in a circle shuddering (rudder wasn't doing anything, except making it spin faster one way).
Back on the forums and after watching a few good video's decided to strip the head down and start over (also thought it would be a good learning process).
While stripping it down I noticed the flybar cage was moving a lot and I could move the flybar horizontaly.
After another internet search revealed a video on how to fix after a crash noticed that the flybar seesaw had bits missing and one side didn't match the other. Back to the internet and ordered an aluminium one as I couldn't find a standard one in stock (Mistake)
as It turned out it was for an aluminium head so it didn't fit in the original head. So back on the internet to find one (by this time they were back in stock). With much glee I tried to fit it but found that it needed bearings which didn't come with it
. Guess what, yes back on the internet searching for bearings (apparently there not made any more for the 400, but searching found the size and there the same as the tail bearings for the 450 3d).
They came today.
(insert theme from any hospital drama) Surgery stared this morning.
Started the surgery with the head block and fitted the flybar seesaw, the bearings were a bit fiddily but sorted them. With that done I went back to the swash plate (Saw a neat trick using an allen key to level the swash plate) so started there, (turned on the electrics so the servos were setup) got everything level. Next fitted the washout thingy and head I had already fitted the feathering spindle and the blade grips to the head. The flybar cage was tricky as I got confused as to what bars went where, but managed it and had to do the flybar at the same time, but didnt fit the paddles as I couldn't work out which way they went (as you look at the end do they point left or right) Back to the internet and sorted that one out then fitted the blades also.
Checked the pitch of the blades and that everything moved as it should again turning on the electrics and using the tx to move everything.
Went outside and spun it up, to my delight everything seemed ok. The head moved as it should the blades spun nicely and even the tail moved as it should.
I am a happy camper, so all I need now is another day like today to crash (also known as flying, but with my record of 1 flight 1 crash im going for the latter).
I have noticed a few new people joining over the last few weeks so thought I would do a write up (not a very good one I grant you)
Also just in case your interested the vendors were (in no order)
Fast Lads, Wireless Madness, Midland Helicopters, Model and Hobby World (Lancaster) and HobbyStores
