  • My story into RC Helis

Started out a few years ago on ebay buying 2 Kyosho nexus helis and not knowing anything about them of I went to the local field and tried to fly them and yes I indeed crashed them and returned home looking on ebay for part to fix them which in its self was a nightmare so they ended up on top of my sons wardrobe. Some time later decided to buy a smaller heli from HeliGuy it was a Esky Belt CPX thought it was great until yet again crashed that also. Back home again order parts to fix then back out to the local field and yes crashed again and again. Decide to put it away until I felt the urge to fly again after repairing it. This brings me up to January this year when I decided to try again with the Belt CPX and still getting it to meet the ground very hard. Decided to join this forum and read a lot about helis and what I needed to know to fly these damn things. As I was reading the forums and looking what to buy next I came across and auction on here that was offering a Rave ENV and started bidding on it and I won (thanks BenScoobert). After receiving the kit and putting it together very carefully I knew I needed to join a club and get some help with this as it seemed very intimidating due to the size of the heli. After visiting local hobby shops in my area I was told that there was a club in Blyth that may be to help with my quest to learn to fly. I contacted the club and joined the BVRMC (Blyth Valley Radio Model Club) and asked if there was any members who may be to help with my hobby interests. Sure enough Craig From BVRMC put me in contact with a great guy called Franky who when I met him at the field with my Rave ENV, checked it over for me and advised that it was not something to learn to fly with as it would be expensive to repair if and when I crash. I asked what would be good for me to learn with and it was surgested that a Thunder Tiger raptor would be better for me that the rave to learn on. Back to ebay and next thing I have a Raptor 50 V2 in my fleet. Again looking for more help Franky came to the rescue and showed me what needed to bet set up with the heli regarding my TX (Spektrum DX8) and the heli its self. Then waited a bit for the weather to get better then met Franky at the field and he even test hovered my heli for me and helped me get to hover it. I instantly got the bug and felt great that I eventually managed to get a heli to hover without smashing it to pieces. This brings me to recent time where im now looking for a new kit as the raptor took a bit of a beating when a screw came out of the pitch control lever when I was at the field and yes ripped my raptor to pieces. After looking into getting parts to repair it I have decided to wait and get a new Raptor Titan kit when they come back in stock a Midlands. I will be back at the field in the near future and hope I can remember all the thing Franky helped me with in setting up a heli. Anyway back to now I still have my Rave ENV sitting in my living room and just begging to be flown for the first time, but I would like to keep it in good order as it is a realy nice piece of kit and would be gutted to see it in pieces if I was to crash it. Away next week im away for my anniversary so intend to get new kit when it stock beginning of May and be back at the field. Thanks for reading my story into RC Helis.

Good story Skeets, glad you stick with it after those early disappointments, and that you are enjoying your flying.

One thing you don't mention is a sim. Have you done all this without one? Phoenix would work great with your dx8 and would help you loads with getting your thumbs in the right habits.

    Have a good anniversary

Tortured story buddy, but know your pain.Franky and I were just talking about the crash today. I would like to think we may see ya soon.
I don't know if your interested, Gladstones at North Shields has a Raptor 50 Se with engine and muffler at a very reduced price. would make a good trainer and all round sports model.
      keep in touch

Yeah have used phoenix sim for quite a while but find it very different to the real thing. I have seen the raptor on Gladstones site but have decided to go with the kit version as I enjoy the build side of things and also have all the electrics and engine still from the crash I had. Will be purchasing my new kit when I return from a week in Spain on 26th and hope to be back at the field bye the beginning of May.

Excellent story, and makes new starters like me have the confidence / urge to get something and get flying.
