  • Will a better Tx help?

I currently own the standard TX that comes with the MSR X.

Would upgrading to the DX6i be an improvement? or for my current level of flying, about 40 flights, should i save my cash and just use the one that came with the heli?

Yes i will be upgrading, possibly to a 130x sometime later this year.

    Thanks

Yes... it will help a lot.

Apart from having sticks that are smoother and easier to move you would have the capabilities of a fully programmable tx. You can accurately set up and change things such as throttle and pitch curves, change the sensitivity of the sticks using D/R and Expo and set up mixes to help cope with anomolies of your particular heli. It might even make learning easier if you can adjust things to make the heli more docile for you in the early stages.

A DX6i would be a significant improvement but if you are thinking of staying with the hobby you would be much better off gettting a DX8. It is much more suited to heli flying particularly when you get above the 130X size. From choice I would go for a secondhand DX8 over a new DX6i anytime.

If you are going to upgrade to the 130x, then upgrading your tx now might be a good idea. Not sure what tx comes with the msrx, but the dx6i is a nice enough piece of kit. Worth keeping your eye open for a decent secondhand one as people tend to upgrade from that. Will it make you fly any better.......possible not!!

Absolutely if you're intending to progress to a more advanced heli (130x and beyond) a proper computer Tx will be a must in tuning and development...

I would avoid DX6i cheap as they are and go for a 2nd hand DX8/DX7 ... nicer to program and nicer gimbals.
I got DX6i and ended up upgrading again anyway

          +1 on that,
I had a dx6i, got fed up with the cheap gimbols/sticks and got a dx7s SOOOO much nicer. Get a DX7s minimum!

And you won't need to upgrade in the future!

I went the Tx that comes with the bnf's to the DX6i to the DX8 route and have to agree that it did feel like quite an upgrade going from the dx6i to the DX8.
But if youre budget at the moment only stretches to a DX6i it would still be a worthwhile upgrade in my opinion. You wont lose an awful lot on it if you decide later down the road to upgrade to a dx7/dx8 and its definitely a lot better than the included Tx's

Or you could use the money you would save getting a dx6i over a 7/8 on something else like a sim? I presume the Tx that comes with the MSRX doesnt work with a sim, Im sure somewhere does packages of phoenix and a DX6i that might work out as a bit of a saving?

The dx6i is a big improvement on the standard msr-x tx. The DX7 is better, but mainly quality rather than features. Keep a check on the monitor screen for dodgy pots with any Speccy tx. Quality control can be a bit hit and miss and faulty pots or sticks if you like do send random commands to the model. This is upsetting when your heli takes off on its own as mine did. Switching off the tx makes the model go failsafe. If you look on the monitor screeen there should be no movement on the bars.

As you have gathered the dx6 dose the job but a 7 or 8 would be better. my advice is first to see what tx the people around you fly with as this will help later when it comes to swapping setups and problem solving. The next step would be to get hold of one and play with it for a while get the feel for it it's going to be in your hands a lot. I have a dx8 but now after about a year I want to learn how to fly pinch style not thumbs and am having trouble getting my hands round it where as the 7 fits much better.

I went down the dx6i route when I got my mCPx and it is just fine for that, and the nano and phoenix, but now I would like to get something a bit better. The problem is that second hand dx8's don't come round that often as there isn't an obvious upgrade route as there is with the dx6i. The fact was when I got it I couldn't justify the expense of the dx8, and also thought that the mCPx might be all the heli I'd ever need ( more fool me) .

Go for the best that you can afford. Stretch your budget to a DX8.
I bought a DX7 with my first collective pitch heli, the 450, thinking that it would be all the transmitter I would ever need. I then had a slight problem with it (my fault not the transmitter). While it was away at Horizon Hobby being fixed (free, thank you HH) I bought a DX8. It is so much better. It is easier to program, easier to use and feels better quality. I wouldn't want to go back to the DX7 now. It seemed expensive at the time but in this hobby you soon get used to spending!!

You can throw alot of money into this hobby, but i wouldn't always say it will get you anywhere. It will help and once a decent tranny is purchased then you won't need another. But it wont improve your flying. At best maybe the smoother sticks will increase your confidence??

Hey guys, thanks for all the information.

I will try and stretch to a DX8 but that's much more expensive than the heli i own ... for now.

What a great day for flying today no wind but damn cold in stoke on trent -3 at 7am! I broke the rotor head linkage and ball off the main blade grip this morning, it still flys but a bit wobbly.

Time to check the spares basket.

                          Thank again
