Glad you have a decent model on the sim, liking the left turn, you right side looks weaker don't become handed lol

Wow! thanks kevdavies. My own personal tutor!! You are hardly moving the sticks. Now I'm wondering if my heli is set up right. But I can experiment. I definitely move my sticks more than you are doing.
Dillwhacker, I was told lead with slight rudder, followed by aileron and elevator!! Not saying you're wrong, but just different ideas. I think I'm not feeding in enough positive pitch to push through the turn. When I turn, I tend to have collective at half, which would equate to very little, if any, positive pitch, therefore losing momentum?? Anyway, I'm very grateful to you lot. Thanks a million, next time I fly I will just practice these wide turns until I get it right.

A final thought: would a lower head speed make it harder? I was flying my T rex at about 70% throttle in stunt 1 mode. Should I be using a higher speed?

no thats fine that would give you about 1800 rpm ish so you should be fine. Forwards speed is the key and very tiny movements, your almost caressing the sticks in the slower more precise stuff

And to add to this how is your heli setup collective wise??

I fly -12 bottom stick, 0 centre stick, +12 top stick. So if you look at the sticks you can work out how much collective pitch im putting in too

Also allow for wind in one direction of the turn, that will dictate your pitch to keep the same height

I'm using about -5, center stick is about +4 and full stick +7. Bear in mind I'm still a bit of a fledgling, but what do you think of these pitch settings? I also have two 450s (3D and X) which are set up roughly the same.

thats just a normal learners curve. I do tend now adays to steer beginners straight onto a linear curve once they can hover as it makes flying around much easier imo. But for normal flight what you have will work. Id say you need more than centre stick tho for holding altitude and speed in a banked turn

I struggled with flying a heli in a big flat circle, don't know what it was but just struggled to get a grip on it, took lots of sim and stick time to get it work. I think it's because it requires full coordination of all the channels but only a very slight, balanced input, particularly with the rudder, only slight input is needed to just keep the tail in the right spot.

try focusing on fast forward flight, then bank it with ailerons and then pull it round with the elevator.. Just do that for start with then start to feed in rudder too, eventually it starts to become natural, it takes a balance of all the controls to do a simple wide circle lol.

Easy question: how do you do smooth turns?

Took me a long time to get to grips with this one as well, still not as good as I want to be, I figure its important to master all this upright stuff before trying anything upside down though. I would say force yourself to practise in both directions to equally to try and avoid the bias in one direction that afflicts most people, took me a while before I got confident going counter clockwise for some reason.

The sim was my friend here, found doing it near the ground on the sim helps me keep the circles tidy and level

..a lot of co-ordinated action. and usually find that unaware but you add, say, aileron to get a bank angle and have to back it off again to hold it rather than have it deepen. That bank angle is also giving you lift since there is still a component in the circular path in the direction of that raised disc..rudder action is to hold the described circle and prevent yaw. Elevator action is to make up for the reduced lift in the circular motion due to the aileron...or when in a really tight bank angle/tight circle (imagine the impossible real 90deg bank angle/knife edge) then you are actually steering the circle with elevator and using rudder as elevator. Ah, the joys of 3D - and my failure to do it..
