Trouble is, the OP stated he's a park/ garden flyer. For that, I think a 500 is too much, if not downright dangerous for someone still learning to hover properly.

I really don't want to see complete novices flying 500 class helis in public parks. Without wanting to turn this into yet another fun police thread, I think a 450 is a sensible approach here.

If it was a choice between the two, I'd go with the 500... but the 500 will cost about a fair bit more to repair after a crash.

You really think a 500 is suitable for learning hovering in a garden, and flying at the local park!?

Personally I don't want to see any novice pilots flying anything in a public area!

If the OP really wishes to progress and do it safely then I suggest joining a club and flying is a designated flying field. Avoid public parks at all costs. Get yourself insured and make sure you're flying in an approved area.

          Once you've done that, buy a 500

He has already said its quite large. So yeah, I'm still saying go 500.

It's a better helicopter and he seems to have suitable space. If the question is should I shove a 600 in there, probably not.

At the moment im trying to master hovering and have quite a large garden, i have given myself a 12ft x 12ft square to fly in and can just about keep my 450 in it (ive been flying in 10mph winds this week) and using pheonix.
12ft square by the sound of it.

I recommend to any new starter to get a 500. One of the guys I was training last year bought a 450 to start with against my advice because it was cheaper - fair enough, everyone has a budget - however 2 month later he ended up getting a 500 anyway. After that he always said he wished he'd bought the 500 first.

Inherently more stable and far easier to work on.

Plus there's also no messing around with the several different versions of parts like the 450 has. It's just basically ESP and Pro. That's it. And many parts are interchangeable anyway.
this is the 500 that im looking at trex 500e. would i be able to hover practice it in a 12x12ft square

Yes - absolutely. But as already posted, you're going to need to find a club to fly it safely in an open space.

I recently maidened my Goblin 500 in my front garden, which is probably about the same space. You can hover a 500 in that space, but not much more. To be honest though, even a 450 is going to be pretty limited in that kind of space. Although I seem to remember you already have a 450 ?? If so, another 450 doesn't really seem to offer anything?

What are you hoping to achieve? Buying another 450, or even a 500, in itself, won't move you on really - at least, not if you stay in the confines of your garden or local park. The best progression path is to join a club. You'll improve quicker, and almost certainly end up with a 500 in that environment. And in that environment, I'd agree that a 500 is the better option.

I hope I'm not throwing too much of an off topic spanner into the works (mods just delete if I am) but I have a Protos 500 that I might sell if your (or anyone's) interested.
It's the carbon 500 with MSH scorpion motor, YGE controller, BeastX, Align 500 size servos and some smashing orangy bits (skids, feathers, tail blades)
It has less than 10 incident free flights on it from all brand new from FL (approx 6 months old)

I'm sorry to be a co3k but I'm not actually 100% sure I'm gonna sell it, but thinking it might finance a new project?
If anyone is interested just PM.
If this post is "not done" just let me know and I'll pull it.
                        Cheers
