  • Setup advice.

    Hi,

New to the forum so would firstly like to say Hi to all!

Recently bought a Walkera 22e, which having read some posts on here doesn't seem to have been a particulary good choice.. Anyhow, stuck with the thing now, so need some advice on setting it up and learning to fly before I upgrade to something better.

So far had two 'test' flights, the first resulting in smashing the blades and a few bits in the head (now upgraded to alloy) and the second being some badly chipped blades. Having played around with a free download sim, the helis on there seem to take off straight up with minimal input on the sticks. My walkera seem to lurch to one side, so think its the head adjusting as have tried trimming on the tx.

So, any advice on setting up the head would be a help so I can have another attempt. Visiting a local club a week monday so should hopefully get some tips there, but any any help in advance would be appreciated.

    Thanks
    Chris

It's natural for any helicopter (With clockwise turning blades) to drift to the left when it gets light on the skids mate. It's because of sideways thrust produced by the tail rotor as it's counteracting the torque reaction of the airframe caused by the spinning main blades. It's normal to have to introduce a slight bit of roll trim to oppose it but until the heli is in the air out of ground effect you can't really judge how much.

Because of the above, in the hover the RH skid will also appear to hang lower than the left skid due to the slight right roll trim input required to keep the heli on course.

A bit of info here about your heli, I'm not personally familiar with it though.

          Chris,

Unfortunately, I have tested most of the Walkera models The problem with the 22E is that the servos are weak (low torque), hence cannot hold their position and there is so much slop in the head/controls that it makes it very difficult to maintain a stable hover.

Even the experienced flyer will find themselves over correcting - it really is a handful. Add the fact that the electronics are poor meaning that glitching is common place. I always experienced glitching within 10 seconds of having the thing in the air.

I know this is a tough bullet to chew but the 22E is barely flyable. You may wish to consider an alternative and more reliable machine to learn on.

Cheers for the input, had done a bit of reasearch on the web but obviously not enough unfortunatley. Reason I went for the 22e is because I wanted to go for a 'proper' heli with a rear rotor rather a twin main rotor one (sorry if not correct terminolgy as new to this).

Anyhoo, stuck with it for the time being as can't afford to buy another one so need to try and get this in the air. There is a set up guide on the link above so going to try that, and going to visit a club next monday so going to see if I can get any tips from there.

More to this rc helicopter lark then meets the eye, and defo a bit more complicated then the cars I used to race a few years back!!
