  • Advice on a good Micro Heli without chocolate motor

I have had a few Helis in the past a Raptor 50 a Hummingbird, 2 Funcopters
and a Blade 400 with the execption of the Funcopter never got them off the
ground, was going to sell them all, till one day i heard about the Blade MSRX
changed my Heli fortunes with that one was able to hover after a while, got another
in case i broke the first one, never did, the only problem is there chocolate brushed
motors, ist one lasted a few weeks, the next a few days, the heli is set up ok came back
from HH after the FET switch failed, at nearly ten pounds a pop its putting me right
off flying them, the Nano i have probably has the same rubbish motor as the MSRX.

The Blade 130 is a bit big to learn on in the living room, the motor on that seems fine
both brushless, but it does have chocolate gears, replacing the main gear with a metal one
just moves the problem to the tail gears, which will strip if you look at it the wrong way.

I need advice on a Micro Heli to learn on that has a motor that will last longer than a few
days, a Walkera or Honey Bee mabye, there is a new Blade mCP-X BL BNF but being a new model
will probably have a few teething problems.

I heard the motors for MSRX and Nano only cost a few pennies per motor to make, Hobbyking does
a motor for 3 Dollars sadly not for the Blade, even if i could get cheap motors it would be ok but
nearly ten pounds is too much for a day or two flying.

All replacement motors have failed after a short time, i was told that what looks like a low battery
light flashing is the motor failing, i was wondering if this is what the Mfat switch to fail on the
circuit board, would using a motor thats on its last legs ruin the FET switch.

I do most of my learning on the MSRX but have had the Nano and 130 up and running both hover quite
well, and after 5 years have had the Blade 400 hovering as well, so making a bit of progress.

Maybe have a look at the MCPX BL?

The msr-x motors last more than a couple of days. They don't like being crashed all the time or run without a few mins to cool down and a small amount of oil helps as well. You'll have to stop crashing so much, that's what a sim like Phoenix is for. The forces are so large in crashes that some damage gets done every time, even if it doesn't show up straight away. The msr-x motors are very poor for £10 though. You can get a 450 brushless for that.

I suppose HH have managed to design something (the msr-x motors ) that's even worse than their lipos were. They need to do something or somebody else will. A 2 for 1 offer would be a good start.

My mcpx v2 (brushed) motor has been going strong for ages. As mentioned, if you let them cool down a little between flights, you should have no problem.

the mcpx BL is probably better still, but takes 2S lipos.

Either the Blade Nano which can be flown indoors or out and is very hard to break, it's made of jelly so it just bounces of stuff ;D

or as suggested the mCPx, I Wouldn't suggest the mcpx bl for indoors as its a bit to powerful and will do damage if it hits anything.

                Undoubtedly.

Unlikely. My first crash on a 450-3D was broken canopy, broken skids, bent main shaft, stripped main gear, bent feathering shaft, broken blades, stripped servo gears. It took me (being a newb at the time) about a week to break it down, watch videos on how to fix it, buy the parts and put it all back together again. Total cost was about £50. My second crash was cheaper as many of the parts came in twos, but not massively so.

My first crash on my 130x didn't break anything. Nor did my second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth or seventh. Total cost of all those learning crashes, £0. Total time lost from flying, zero.

Even when it did eventually break something, it was somthing like skids - £5, canopy (sellotaped), tail gears (£3).

Nothing like the same price ...

MCPX BL has a few teething problems in the way of a tail wag and kick. I'll be selling mine soon.

Id keep clear of the mcpX BL it has loads of issues. On a poll on HF over a third have faults out of the box, both of mine did and so its gone back for good! The nano cpx is fantastic apart from like you say the motors fail way to easily. I have converted one of mine to a brushless front and back and it flies great really happy with it and loads of power for the size. Run batteries back to back and no issues as yet! Either Astroid designs or Pjacqs sells them. Im holding some of the Pjacqs ones here in the UK to ship out for him. Its some investment to start with but then no more £10 motors anymore and way more power! You do need to have some ability to solder though. The esc is soldered up so its just the power wires and the signal wire to solder to the 3 in 1. Worth a thought! http://www.rcheliaddict.co.uk/sale/9...-upgrades.html

The only other real option is the mcpx V2 which I found was too large for indoor flying in the living room! Still love to hover it in the house but for circuits it has to go outside! The nano is small enough to practice circuits and inverted indoors and takes a real beating before you have any major problems with it.
