  • Midland RTF 450 Sport

I've been looking at getting a 450 - I was think a flybared for my first heli and have found that Midland sell varous T-Rex models as RTF. From what I understand they a Super Combo pack, built & test flown by them and sold ready to fly.

Anyone had any experience with these? anything I should look out for if I buy one before I spool it up for the first time? - Specifically the 450 Sport.

I know a lot is learnt when building a heli, but as a bginner I am considering one out impaticence / inexperience / fear of building a heli, making a mistake and crashing it seconds into it's maiden flight - then having to explain to the Mrs & Kids.
    Blade mCPx V2
    Align T-Rex 550E FL (Talon 90, Align 3GX, AR6210)
    DX6i
    Phoenix Sim

The other good thing about building and setting a heli from a kit is when you crash... And yes it is a when and not an if,,,,
You will be able to repair and re set up the heli yourself,
I'd recommend DIY from a kit. The guys over the field will check it out before you maiden if you wanted.

Midland have a service "ultimate build n fly" in which they take a kit and build it for you. This is a relatively expensive route to take however.

You'll get a ready-to-fly helicopter cheaper (I suspect) if you look at one of the factory pre-built RTF helis from either Align or Blade, eg. (in 450 size)

KX015083T | Align T-Rex 450 Plus RTF [comes with Futaba TX]
RH45E02XT | Align T-Rex 450 PLUS DFC RTF [comes with Futaba TX]
      BLH1650 | E-FLITE BLADE 450 3D BNF AIRCRAFT ONLY [ would work with your DX6i ]

Personally however, I'd suggest going with the 450X as your first 450 size heli. When (sorry, not if!) you crash, flybar cages are fiddly things to re-assemble. Flybarless is much easier in this respect and the 450x really is a very good heli (at least, in my opinion! )

It's a good point. There's plenty of build vids on youtube. Align have vids for the 500EFL and there's other youtube'rs that make some pretty helpful stuff (eg. freddy can fly).

If you've got people nearby who can help, building a heli isn't as intimidating as you think. Also, as has been pointed out, you better understand how to fix it when things go wrong ...

You do learn a lot building your own model, when your first starting out there is a hell of a lot to take in concerning the do's and don't of the build and set up. Make sure you do your homework

If your not a member of a club or have an experienced friend that you can call upon you may not find the build easy. Learning to fly is difficult, throw into the mix a poorly built/setup heli you may quickly become very disillusioned about the whole hobby.

Midlands RTF heli's are built by one of the best guys in the business so you won't be disappointed if you choose to go that route.

Personally I started out getting myself a Trex 450 V2 sport (great beginners model) but became very impatient with the build / setup and went out and got a Blade 450 3d because at that point I just wanted to get out and fly!!!

Hi from a relative noob myself, build it yourself. I went down the 500 route myself and really enjoyed the build and with the help and advice of this forum and guys from the club it now flies . Don't get me wrong its not easy to do but the reward is amazing.I think a little wee might of escaped on Saturday on my first flights and probably a little bit of number 2

Go for the build and enjoy it. At least then you will know how to fit your upgrades
