  • am i missing the obvious?

    Sorry noob questions......... Gyros!!!!.
    Ok here goes.....
I have a gy401and I've set it up via instructions, but I have zero pitch on blades and full movement left and right no binding.
But in hh mode on spool up heli spins to the left as zero pitch on tail.
the only way I could hold it was to subtrim over 50° which gave blades pitch.
but rate mode (I.e the one that doesn't allow tail to center after you release tx stick sorry if hh and rate are wrong way rd still learning). In that mode heli holds but nearly crashed it by pyro and over correcting pyro.
so am I meant to have tail blade pitch? Or have I done something wrong?.

You do have things backwards.. rate mode is the one where the rudder self-centres and HH where is holds position. If this is your 500 then you want to set it up in rate mode (but initialise in HH when you plug in). Look at the tail pitch arm and you'll see it;s designed to indicate it's correct position on set-up.
Once you've got it set up test it in HH a beginner...it takes a little bit of practice to control things while the heli main blades are spoolong up to speed. Once you have heli in a comfortable hover then fine tuning in rate mode so it holds straight is ideal (but not essential). Also check you have the tail blade grip pitch arms the right way around - it's possible to set grips up during build with leading edge or trailing edge control and they require opposite travel to do their things

So why do the instuctions tell you to center the slider and set your end points but doesn't say then move your servo down the boom to give you pitch?. Or do I subtrim it in as everybody says never subtrim.

Do not subtrim. Adjust usually by winding the ball-link in or out. Having the servo at a set position (in the case of the 500 tight against the boom block) makes it easier when you need to replace the boom

thankyou. I tried that lucky I had training on because without touching rudder in hh mode it hovered but then I flicked it to rate mode whilst airbourne and imediately pyroed........
tried flying in hh mode and what a nightmare. I'm used to 130x where tail holds and you turn and release and tail stops not keeps going like it did in that mode.

Are you absolutely sure that your gyro is correcting correctly. Fold the bottom blade out parallel with the floor and lift the tail, slowly move the heli to the left, the tail blade should move in the direction you are pushing it, ie to the left the blade moves to the left.

Make sure that you are in HH mode, I wouldn't worry too much about adding any pitch to your blades, not yet, understand how it all works first and then you can add pitch in rate mode. When you move the rudder if it stops where it is when you let the stick go then it is in HH, if it centers then it is in rate mode.

HH is the mode you want, it sounds like you are switching into rate mode and it not being setup will allow the heli to turn to whatever pitch you have in the middle.

Bingo cracked it guys thankyou. Seems like I am trying to fly it in rate mode the one where it centres. Thinking that's what the 130x did. Having now inspected the 130x seems like it stays on the given pitch input. That was why I was getting it wrong. And I was adjusting lower gain channel down to 24% that now explans why I was drifting left and correcting but on release it was repeating, if I upped gain to nearer 40% it rotated slowly right. I needed to be flying in the other mode...... Didn't seem right until I matched it up with 130x

On the 401 the red led is on when in hold mode. You should initialise in hold mode or the red led will flash to indicate an error. It does still work though. The 401 works differently to the 130X. The 401 is much older, the 130X switches into rate mode itself when the motor is not running.
