Hello. First post. Learnt how to hover my twister CP tail in. Got ok with that but did get all scary when I start to deviate from here. Eventually pranged it and gave up for a while.

Anyway, found this forum and seems a Sim is what I need. Question is : I need a new computer and have no idea what specs I need to ask for (computer illiterate). Will a good laptop do it ?

    Thanks. Great forum.

    Brian.

    A good laptop should be up to the task. To make sure, you can find out what spec your laptop is by;

    1. Click on the START button
    2. Choose CONTROL PANEL. (if the control panel says "pick a catagory" at the top, click on "classic view" in the upper right box)
    3. Doublr click on SYSTEM, near the end of the list.
    4. On the general tab, at the bottom, look at COMPUTER and that will tell you the type of chip you have and how much memory.

Post those details on here and I am sure one of the sim users can confirm if your laptop meets the minimum specs needed.

    Cheers

    Mark

Thanks Mark but I'm using the wifes work computer to post this and I know it is no good for anything that needs any power, or whatever it's called. So, time to buy a new one but I could do with all the specs I should ask for so the kid in PC World won't palm me off with the crap thats been on the shelf since last March.

I fancy a laptop but was advised that it wouldn't cope by a friend (who probably knows as much as me....not a lot)

        phoenix minimum requirements are

        1 ghz pentium3 / 4 or athalon prossesor
        g/force4200/ati9600 ...128mb graphics
        256 mb ram
        750 mb free disc space
        dvd rom drive
        usb ports
        direct x compatible sound card.

these are pretty low specs for a modern off the shelf pc so you should be able to get better quite cheaply

There's no point going down there in the winter months, because the heli flyers there find it too cold Only heli there will be mine . Don't take it every time I go

You'll get a much more capable desktop PC for your money, laptops are getting better but you need a pretty good one to give you a good sim experience imo.

Most cheap laptops use a a poor graphics card. (Usually part of the motherboard not a seperate 3d card at all.)

Genrally you end up with pretty poor performance as a result... I have access to two laptops. Both intel, one single core processor and one dual core processor. Both are borderline for phoenix... (graphics suffers and tends to be jaggy and reflections are poor).

My 3 year old desktop upstairs however, with a 3d accelerator runs beautifully!

I'd alos recommend going for a desktop over a laptop, general, for out right performance in Phoenix... I'm not saying the ~£500 laptop won't play it at all.. Just you can get better performance, as a rule, from a desktop.

Thanks for all the replies. I think i'll get a decent desk top. I'm a bit 'pre computer' !

One more question. I saw a lad on you tube who flew a small electric heli around the very first time he took off having learnt on a sim. Is this possible, are they THAT good ?

And far easier to upgrade should you need to.

Yes Brian they will teach you a hell of a lot, still not the same as the real deal but saves the heartache and exspense, they are that good !
