  • Tools for Build

Soon I will be buying a Heli kit to build and first I want to get the tools needed to do just the job.

Being a Gas installer/ Plumber I have tools, but what do I need for a Heli build?

Can you please give me links to where to buy them please?

    Paul

kylelnsn's list looks like a good start.

Don't think you will need red threadlock as it makes the bond almost permanent without heat to remove. The blue just needs a firm twist on the bolt to remove but it stops it coming undone in flight. Every metal on metal bolt must be threadlocked. If an assemly comes assembled in the kit then dismantle it, check it over and reassemble using a small dab of blue treadlock on every metal to metal bolt. Don't use threadlock when screwing in to plastic.

You don't need much threadlock either... just the smallest of blobs and then spun on the finger to spread it into the threads. Don't get it on plastic as it weakens it. Don't get it in bearings either. It really didn't take me long to get used to using it effectively and there are videos on youtube showing you how to use it properly.

I'd get a good set of allen key drivers, 1.5mm - 3mm at least I found, and a good set of small screwdrivers too. You'll use those a lot throughout your time in the hobby so it is worth getting a good set.

Ball link pliers are essential I found as I don't have strong fingers! I got the ones with curved arms.

Also, don't overtighten anything. With threadlock on it needs a tweak to make sure it is firmly fastened but a lot of the holding will be done by the threadlock. Don't go all He-Man or you will strip the threads.

Sorry if you know this stuff but it is worth saying again for others too.

BTW Clearly, I am no expert having just completed my first build myself!!! But I have just gone through the same research myself so I thought I would share.

Good choice. I use red t/l for motor and pinion.

                      Re: Tools for Build

Yep red is stronger. You will not often remove motor or pinion so red ui used. To replace parts blue as easy to undue.

Well it is a matter of opinion whether red is needed at all as far as I can tell. I didn't use red at all in my build but then again I haven't flown it yet!!! If it falls apart then perhaps I should have used red!!!!

No, I didn't buy that kit because I already had most of the tools I needed before I got into flying models.

to be honest mate? none ... make sure you got a guy to hand who knows his business and got the tools you will then be able to identify what you need, but you will need the experience and knowledge to build it safely and get it in the air - sounds cocky but I think most people may admit that without the help of experienced guys they wouldnt have successfully maidened their builds ...

as for tools you will need allen keys, the sets of 4 will do, pitch gauge depending if FBL or FB digital or non-digital, small philips screw drivers .. else download the manual in advance as they usually mentioned what tools are needed, applies to align kits ...

                            enjoy the build ...
