  • 120sr help

Hi all, took my 120sr out to the field today with a few of the guys, and it seems very unstable when flying

milly0812 took it for a spin for me (thank you) and although it seemed reasonable in his hands, he said he was having to fight it all the time to keep control.

should it be so skitish? i cant get to hover at all.

    what could be wrong?

oh, im trying to use the rtf tx that came with it.

    120sr help

    Ditch that tx
Did I see you mention somewhere you have a dx6i?

If so use that, then you can calm the Heli down as little or as much as you need

The thing about the 120SR is that it has a 45deg flybar which self-stabilises it. It may be that an experienced pilot used to CP helis does find it difficult and the flybar tends to pendulum the heli in fast forward flight.

In truth, it can't really be skittish, but it can suffer from Toilet Bowl Effect (TBE) if the links aren't clean.

Also, was there any wind? They don't handle too well with any wind.

yes there was a bit of wind today, but even if i try a sly hover in the front room it just skids off to the left..

The left moving nature may just be that until you get it off the ground, the tail is pushing it to the left a little.

I cant get out tonight, but could stop by one evening in the week to take a look if you like.

Yeah, as Jimmy says, that's normal and is called translating tendency. It's a reaction of the tail rotor pushing the heli left. When I got my first 120SR, I was convinced there was something wrong with it and googled "left drift" until the cows came home. Eventually I had it checked out too, and found the details on translating tendency.

It's part of the learning process, but you find that after a while, a little bit of right cyclic on take off becomes second nature.

Interestingly, the Align Trex 100 fixed pitch automatically applies right cyclic on take off to counteract this effect. Personally I think you're just better off learning the correction as you'll need it for everything else.

Mine does need a definite effort to stop it going left on liftoff so if you are a not ready for it then it could just lurch left. The trick is to know it will happen and be ready for it immediately as the heli lifts.

Been having another go today, took the canopy off all together now, after i broke it yesterday, and i think it probably me, not the heli...perhaps i wasn't expecting it to be quite so difficult/sensitive, i know its only a little fp thing but compared to the co-axial i flew previous (didn't even have a tail blade ) it a very different heli.

managed to get it up in the front room a few times just now, and a hover of sorts for a few seconds, then i lost it and broke a skid .

i think practice will sort it for me.

You will find that a pot of CA glue (medium) will likely be your friend here with the skids, or failing that just some cellotape often does the trick

Oh, and the sensitivity thing, its something you will get used to, though you can 'dial it down' in other transmitters like the DX6i.

I could practically leave my coaxial hovering, go make a cup of tea and come back to find it in the same place, you wont find anything like that stability with anything more advanced.

i find my 120 sr exactly the same garry , i'm going to get a dx6i , instead of my dx5e , then a blade mcpx , so there'll be a 120 sr up for sale in the next month or so
