  • What signs to look out for when a Motor is failing

When I put my pith up the motor sounds like its struggling quite a bit and as a noob I dont know if that normal or not?

Can anyone give me some tips on what to look for when a motor is wearing out.

    Thanks in advance

What signs to look out for when a Motor is failing

From my mCP X experience usually you will just notice a drop in power... Then the heli will start dropping from the air randomly.

Both the above can also be a sign of dying lipos.

Lastly, the motor sometimes starts to screech... That one at least makes it clear lol.

I've heard the nano goes through motors very quickly, so it's probably an idea to buy a couple or even contemplate one of the brushless upgrades for much improved longevity.

It may be struggling if your throttle curve is too low. If you can set pitch and throttle curves on your tx, try a flatter pitch curve, so instead of 0 to 100, try 30 to 70. And get your throttle curve nice and steep, try 0 - 75- 80- 90- 100. Your head speed might be too low to take the extra pitch you are putting in. If your bats are new, they might need a few cycles to get to max power, if they are old, time for new ones, or you might need new motor, try a drop of oil on it, it might save it.

If the heli has had a crash then the main gear might of been knocked out of place and is not making correct contact with the motor pinion, give the head and the main a pinch together just slightly and see if it moves up.

Change the motor. If wrong you have a spare. If you can think of a quick test that doesn't waste any money and gives a positive result, it's worth doing. The proper thing to do is measure the motor current when new and when faulty with a known load, like none(gear disengaged) and off a known voltage, say a fully charged new lipo. Easier to swop it though.

I have just changed mine, I noticed that the batteries were noticeably warm after a 4 min flight, and that my icharger was putting more than 80% energy back in, which it didn't used to do, a new motor, and cool batteries, and icharger is only putting 66-70% back in, so I guess the motor was pulling more current....

I had a minor crash with my msr-x and afterwards my 4 minute flights were down to three minutes. I'm waiting for a new motor. It could be the mesh has gone tighter. I think with these smaller heli motors they are even less reliable than lipos. My msr motor was ok though a few years ago.
