  • New to this Game - Clubs in South Wales Area?

Hi I have just used some spare cash to buy my self an electric Heli and I am very keen to get started on what looks to be a great hobby - I know many of you will take the view of that I am daft starting with a TREX 450 but I am and will be working on a simulator before I even try to get off the ground and in the air - I bought the kit off Ebay and the gentleman who sold it to me has been really helpful and even called to check I had managed to reassemble it, which I did fine.

My question is where can I find out if there is a model club close to where I live?

I live near Swansea South Wales as I recognise that I have an awful lot to learn but as Matthew has already shown me the Heli fraternity seem to be a really helpful bunch!

Yep, people are really helpful in clubs, youd do well to join one. I think you can look up local clubs to you on the BMFA website? I'm not sure where your local one is as im in London.

Nowt wrong with starting on a 450 but make sure you put lots and lots and lots of sim time in before you even try and fly it! One thing thatd probably also stand you in good stead is getting a cheapo co-ax or single rotor fixed pitch just to whizz around with in the living room to get used to how a heli handles and looking at it in different orientations.

Similators help a lot but I find flying for real very different, because of the way the model appears to you in the air, the perception of where it is in relation to you and the ground (Difficult to tell on the sim) and also the sound!

I also find flying a heli for real much more fun, even if it is a cheapo crap one from argos in the living room compared to 3d'ing on the sim ,its more satisfying to do it for real and thus your more driven to do it

good luck with the hobby and welcome to RCHA!

Thanks for the help and for posting the link for the BMFA I do have a cheap indoor Heli which I have started using - it was my son's and he is in Uni so I need to find out what he has done with the Battery Charger as I have run them down.

        Thanks again

Depends how far you want to travel, I can't think of any clubs past Nelson. Theres a few further south around Cardiff and Newport.

If it's one of those sub-£50 helis you tend to get at Xmas - don't bother with it. The controls for those are different to the "real" RC helis, and you'll end up holding yourself back by trying to learn two control systems. Essentially, if it's a "double horse" or "Syma" heli - don't go near it.

Can't speak for Gaer Park and Llandow as I'm not a member. The main flying site in Llantrisant is open 7 days a week from 8.30am and they also use Tonyrefail School on a Wednesday night for indoor flying. You generally find the other helis flying on the Llantrisant site sat/sun afternoons, welly boots required lol.

Theres also a club in Nelson, however I've never found it

Gaer Park is also open 7 days/week although you will normally find more members at the club on weekends not surprisingly. A great club with great members, there are as many heli pilot members as there are planks which is good!
