  • A project to aim for

One of the things that interests me in Heli's of all sizes is just how small the mechanical side of it is, As I'm still getting to grips flying my Blade cx2 I'm toying with the idea of potentially getting a second heli to build with a aim to fly it once my skills have develop according, plus it will give me something to tinker with when I"m not flying it.

So what would your suggestions for something to build/ tinker with a step up from the cx2? I"ve thought of a blade 130 or possibly a trex 250, like I say its a bit of a project, I have a habit of pimping my rides though

    Cheers Jim

just how small the mechanical side of it is
I'm not sure what you ean by that. The theory is scary complex and few of us understand it even if we can set a heli up to fly despite it...

Tinkering when not flying is fine..but if you can't fly it then you can't really appreciate what your tinkering is doing <s>. Apart from cost and space the larger helis fly easier but may be daunting/scary and more liekly to damage you if learning solo without club support. A 450 size is probbaly the best compromise next step.

Apologies I should have explained in more detail, I intend to either build my next helicopter in a kit or upgrade an existing one.

i would say in long run a 500 would be a much better option while yes it does cost more the 500 is much more stable and less likely to crash where the 450 can be a handfull. also 500 easyer to work on

Most build their own. Go look at the finless Bob build vids on helifreak. It's not really difficult at all..just a careful plod

isn't the jump between the blade cx2 and 500 heli a massive one ?

yeah it is pretty big but i would also go with a 500 nxt, more stable in the air easier to work on and wouldnt see the need of upgrading again soon after which may well be the case with the 450

as above yes its a massive jump but the benifits of the 500 is massive too

As Vinny says, it is a big jump twixt a Blade cx2 and a 500, but assuming the purpose is for your improving building and flying skills, then it makes sense do do so with the best chances of success. Between a 450 and a 500 there's quite a gap in the controllability IMO, the 450 can be a scarey little bugger and very easily slammed into the deck even when dumbed down. There is that extra bit of stability with the bigger 500, easier to see and control, both essential for a beginner and easier to work on too, plus spares are nearly as cheap (ish) as 450s. It's down mainly to your budget of course, but the bigger in this case, the better.
