      [QUOTE=rudi;923492]And back on topic...

      How were we not on topic? We were discussing how to progress?!? Maybe it moved onto differing opinions on how to learn... But ultimately we were on topic.?!? £$% $%$£$%^ ^%$$

        I think the OP made a nice thread about dealing with the speed aspect of modern helicopters, and it looked to me like the thread had turned instead into a debate about the importance of nose-in hovering for circuit flying.

        The OP's dilemma was getting forgotten in the debate, which in my opinion makes it off topic.

        So it is not so much what was being discussed, but the context in which it was being discussed and lack of direct relation to the OP.

          Speed of the heli is not an issue if you know how to control and stop the machine (without destroying it), except if you go over 100 mph (when weird things start to happen). Hence, the advice to learn how to control and stop a heli, which will most likely lead to more confidence when flying. I mean, it only takes a couple of hours on the sim to learn to hover/control nose in and side orientations at basic level.

          Alternatively, just stick to zipping from left to right and back - still fun.

            Thanks for all the opinions and advice. I think my biggest issue is confidence... 18 years ago, when I was tooling around with my Hirobo Shuttle, I was in my teens and thinking back I wasn't scared of flying it at all. I think that younger reactions, lack of fear made it very easy to learn to fly. I also believe that the shuttle for far more docile than my Trex450 or 500... even when they're set up for a beginner... I found that even afer a 18 year break, I was able to hover (just) the Trex 450 within a couple of battery packs and that when I upgraded to the 500 I didn't even bother with training undercarriage for it. The problems only occured when I started initiating forward flight... and I was shocked at how fast these things go...again that might be a perception issue or it might be my lack of skill at controlling it!!!

            It hasn't put me off, I just thought I'd ask he question, because there's clearly a wealth of experiece to be found in this forum!!!

              Well thats weird.... as the title says how to progress.... which we were talking about ?!!!! You subjectively feel we were not on topic. I subjectively feel we were. So it is more your opinion that we were off topic than a fact..... Nice one
