How do I progress???

Hi all,

Since rejoining this hobby after a 18 year break, I find myself able to hover) both my helis (trex 450 and 500 with no issues... so I went to a decent size field today to try some circuits and proper flight... only problem is these helis (align Trex 500e) are a lot faster than the Hirobo Shuttle that I used to fly... I scared myself silly when attempting to initiate forward flight. I'm getting bored of just hovering so how do I progress??

Hovering nose in doesn't interest me at the moment... I seem to remember when I flew previously that I could fly nose in, but didn't need to hover nose in... I was told that would come eventually... I just don't know what to do next...

Learn to nose in, boring but you need it! You can't do much without being able to hover nose in!

I was in a similar situation with my 450 some months back. The purchase of an mCPX and then a 130x were the catalyst for progression. I found I could learn the moves on the mcpx without fear, then translate that knowledge to the larger helis.

The phoenix sim would achieve the same thing, but for me, a computer is just no replacement for the real thing!

Just out of interest, how big is the Mcpx? I've looked on line and can get one for £100. Can you get spares for it? don't really know much about it... but am definitely interested!!

Yep, you can get spares on it very easily! You could build one from scratch out of the upgrade parts available, mine is a good example of this! Although you should probally keep some stuff stock like the frame. Also the extended boom is a good adition to improve stability.

It can handle a fair bit of wind too as its flybarless!
If you get it get the £120 BNF version as its the V2 which has better firmware/board than the v1.

its a cracking little heli about 20cms long and im learning with mine. just need to practice more i guess

I don't understand the whole "You must hover nose in" thing. I tried and failed at nose-in on the simulator so I gave up trying. Instead, I flew my helis, and after a couple of weeks flying in the field at the back of the house, I went back on the simulator and could hover nose-in without even thinking about it. It just came naturally after flying the heli back to myself for a while.

I think the transition from nose-in forward flight to nose-in hovering is much easier than going straight into nose-in hovering.

King's Lynne models has the V2 BNF for £100... I'll get it ordered, along with a couple more batteries for £7...
Yes I do have the Spectrum 6DXi tranny... I assume that will do the job,

My missus is going to kill me!!! I bought the Trex 450 on the basis that I'd got a new job... then I snuck the 500 past her without her really noticing... but I reckon she is going to notice a 3rd heli!!!

The only thing you need nose in hovering for, is to hover nose in. Nothing else requires this.

Its a good thing to have, but you do not need it before circuits, and certainly most sport flying.

Circuits will actually help your nose in IMO.

There are plenty who will tell you differently however.

There's also the nano-cPX now, which is even smaller but I can't really comment on that heli yet. The mCPX though is a fab machine, and parts are cheap and readily available. If I do have one piece of advice mind - buy upgraded landing skids. The stock ones are quite flimsy and will almost certainly be the first things to break in a crash. By contrast, my upgraded skids have had numerous crashes and not a scratch on them!

The nano is great, but not as a first or second heli, and definitely not if you find a 450 and 500 too fast.

Its squirrelly and very very quick for its size
