  • Spinning out of control (and advise on getting a new heli)

    Dear All,

I have a Honeybee CP3 that I've been flying for the last few months now and I had a relatively small prang the other day which seems to have done a lot more damage than I thought it would (just a rough landing and a tip-over). I've had to replace a bent tail boom, the rotor blades, the tail motor was hanging off and the main gear cog had a few teeth sheared-off. It's all back together now and apart from having to track the blades a little, it's smoother than ever.

The problem is though, now the heli spins uncontrollably anti-clockwise. No matter how little (or much) proportional I give on the mixer(?) and even with full opposite trim and rudder, it just wants to spin wildly! Any help would be appreciated as to be honest I'm getting a little fed up with this thing. It seems SO twitchy and basically really hard to keep on top of – even just trying to hover. I've probably spent about what it cost to buy in repairs alone! I've heard nothing but good things about the T-rex 450's, would it be easier to fly (i.e. more stable) than what i've currently got? Would I need to upgrade my transmitter? I really want to take it to the next level but I'm not sure if the helicopter I've got is hindering me of if I'm just rubbish! (I don't think I'm that bad though!)

Any help/advice would be great. I love flying my help so fixing this problem is my priority but advice on a next-level up heli setup would also be much appreciated!

    Tom.

It sounds like the tail motor is goosed. Do the tail rotors move at all? Have you altered the tail gain? I would check that right/left inputs are making the tail rotors move correctly (they should spin in opposite directions) and if they do, play with the gain to see if you can dial it out.

The trex 450 is a great Heli but their are others at this level eg. Blade 450X that reflect really good value. You're going to need a new transmitter (a DX6i will set you back £60 second hand of the BMFA) but you'll find most heli's that have a main engine driven proportional tail and a decent gyro will handle a lot better than the CP3

Tom, I am very much a beginner, I hover at 45 and 90 deg both directions and just starting forward flight, I still have a long way to go but to tell the truth it is no thanks at all to the CP3 I had, it was an absolute nightmare to even hover and like you a little ding caused so much damage and mine too spun out of control after repair, I just binned the whole thing and have never regretted it. my personal opinion is get away from esky. Whatever you do move onto will require setting up to your current skill level and trust me you will still crash :-) I bought a thunder tiger innovator from ebay, some people don't like them but I love it, you can plug it into your computer and select which level your at and it will set itself up, ok it didn't teach me the mechanics but it did get me flying, its not made any more but you can pick them up used for about 80 quid on ebay with transmitter and battery so I bought 2, one for spares. I have also bought a trex 450 sport and altered the pitch etc to tame it down and although its a quality heli I still prefer the TT

Thanks to both of you for your replies. I seem to have sorted out the issue by fiddling with the proportional again (and unplugging the motor in and out a few times). I always have to adjust the proportional every time I fly it as it never seems to be consistent. I'm definitely going to look in to a new heli. Thanks for your advice though!

Get a blade 130x cheap on parts big plus is u can hover in tight space eg garden so that means you get lodes more flight time as lipos are peanuts for non stop flying and the 130x is very roboste at low head speed
          trex 700le fbl and a cpx-plop
No shopping list of helis here
          just one weapon does all

Tom, glad you got it going, stick with it mate and when you finally get another heli that has a collective tail and not an electric tail you will find it a lot better.

Is the 130x really that good ? I've been considering getting one, not sure to get one or wait for the new blade cp x micro. I have a blade 120 sr I presume the 130x is a similar size ?

                I would advise against a 130 x
It seems to be pot luck whether you get a flyeable one. And spares are expensive, considering what you get. I would suggest, a t trex 450 sport, dx 6i, or dx7, a sim, and a many battery's as you can get. That's a good route, that should help you progress IMO

Tom, my answer will really depend on a couple of things.

Firstly how deep are your pockets as this hobby really can drain the bank account and secondly how serious are you about this hobby?

The advice I'd give is buy the best you can afford. If you buy something first that will last you whilst you progress (i.e. 7 channel or above transmitter so you can fly the bigger helis when you progress) then it will save alot on buying and selling (although for some that's half the fun!) later. If you're serious about the hobby then buy a well known make, which one might depend on if you want to build the heli from a kit or just plug in a battery and fly it. Kit form Align, Gaui, Minature Aircraft etc. etc. ready to fly then the Eflight Blade helis are OK. Also where are you going to fly it, the larger the space the bigger the heli you can get which means that the more stable it will be...but the more scary and more costly (hence the how deep are your pockets and how serious about the hobby are you) to crash.

I'd recomend going and joining a Heli club, as the advice and support from there is invaluable on the whole. Once you've decided on the transmitter (do you get a Spektrum, Futaba, JR etc.) and the heli then invest in a SIM like Phoenix, it will save you hundreds (or even thousands) in crash costs as crashing on the SIM is free plus you can fly when it's raining/snowing/blowing a gale!

My personal advice would to but something like a T-rex 450 with a DX8 transmitter (you can then also fly the bind and fly heli's like the 130x etc.) as it's big enough to be flown indoors in a sports hall and also will handle some wind (I was flying mine last weekend and it was 12 - 18 mph winds) and if the garden is big enough you can hover (or fly) it there. THe DX 8 means you can fly the bigger helis be it electric or nitro if/when you progress.

Whatever you do have fun and enjoy the hobby

Nobbycopter is bang on on what he say in his post. (The advice I'd give is buy the best you can afford.
