  • Help From Someone in the South East London Area.

    Hi,
I'm new to RC helicopters but I recently bought a used honey bee king for £25 which I thought was a good deal because it came with an additional battery and a set of blades. The person I bought it from sold it to me as a faulty item as he said that when the rotor starts up the whole helicopter starts to vibrate and after bringing it home I can confirm that to be the case.

The reason I'm posting this is to find out if someone can help me by having a look at the heli, helping me with fixing the problem and maybe giving me a brief lesson on the basics.

For taking the time to help I don't mind paying you with cash or with a nice bottle of single malt whisky .

    Hope you can help.

        Hi and welcome Jamster,
I cut my teeth on one of those critters and they do require a bit of patience. Bit of reading here on HG until you find someone local that can help.

          Thanks mole hunter.
The heli is the original honey bee king, are there large differences between the one I have and the newer ones?

Have you managed to get the heli up to full speed, without it taking off that is. Does it still vibrate? If you're increasing the speed too slowly you may be hitting that vibrating speed and backing it off thinking there is something wrong, try increasing the speed past the vibration. All helis seem to have a cetain headspeed where they have some vibration, you just need to get past it quickly. DO THIS OUTSIDE, CLEAR OF OBSTRUCTIONS!!!! :-) Good luck and welcome to the forum

              Hi Jamster,
I would be surprised if there was much difference between the King 1 and 2. The King 3 had some long over due improvements but the principles for the set up are universal.

Back to you vibes. If it's rotating, it will produce vibes and just about anything can cause vibes. You could start by removing the main blades and then spool her up and see if you still have them. If not, then it maybe down to the blades needing balancing or they were too tight in the grips. It's a process of elimination.

              Good luck, Marty

PS. Take care, it maybe small but they've sent folk to casualty.

I'll try and post a video of the vibration tomorrow but after watching a couple of videos of other helicopters starting up my one looks like it's going to rip it self apart if I throttle it up anymore.
It violently moves and sort of bumps around the place.

I like the idea about removing the blades to see if the vibrations go away, I'm not at home at the moment but I'll let you know once I do it.

Also, thanks for the welcome and telling me to be safe.

Apologies for the late reply, the allen key set that I had didn't actually have the key that I needed so I ordered a new set.

I removed the blades but left the flybar on.

Initially the the vibrations were there but they actually went away after I attached the battery to the heli because before I just left it on the ground.

I think the main problem now is to do with the tail rotor because as you can see in the video (yes I know the quality is terrible) it's spinning even with the tail rotor trim completely on the left. The spin starts to slow down when I start applying left rudder on the stick but at the end you can see that even with maximum left rudder trim and maximum left on the throttle stick the heli is still turning a little.

                    http://tinypic.com/r/1pw0om/6

I still need to see if the vibration issue is there with the blades on and will do that once I get home.
