  • Ditched the Trainer gear today.

So this morning I rock up to "The Meads" in Hertford with gear attached and was hovering quite happily and moving around a little. After the flight and back in the paddock, one of the more experienced heli addicts says "you don't need the trainer gear no more mate - take them off".

Frankly, I had no idea when this was supposed to happen and appreciated the gentle prod he was giving me. He's seen me fly two or three times in the last couple of weeks.

He then very helpfully re-set the trims, eliminated a small tail twitch by a gyro adjustment and a turn to correct the tracking. He Demoed and then talked me through a landing.

AMAZING difference. It was like I could feel the freedom the heli had. Actually easier to fly I think.

Spent the rest of my batteries taking off and landing

Huge thanks to Graham. Feel like I took a step today.

Well done, Mim. Well done to Graham for helping you. Often it just takes a nudge from someone else present to move us on.

Well done Mim, it's a great feeling when the training gear comes off isn't it! Well done to Graham for helping you out. As Vikki says all it sometimes takes to inspire progress is a little nudge, you can even get it from reading others achievements on here as you think "hmm I'm going to try that next time".

If you haven't already got one I'd recommend getting a sim to save on repair bills when you're transitioning from hovering into forward flight as that's when a lot of "accidental" landings can occur

Nice one. Was only a few months ago I went through the same. Yes the heli is better to fly and you feel so free. Now for the next step.......

Haha, I just removed training gear from my 450 pro, but had no good starts/landings since then ... Too windy, too high grass etc. honestly not my fault ! Well, not really

I tried and have 2 sets of broken blades to prove it, but not going back to training gear anyway!

I had a roll over shortly after taking my landing gear off and went back to them for another several flight just to get the confidence back up and learn the importance of soft landings that you need without the landing gear. And any other things you kinda don't work out until you take them off.

                        Happy flying.

If you can find a smooth floor then this will help. At our indoor venu it's painted concrete so quite smooth (not forgiving on unplanned landings tho ) so if you just get the heli light on the skids or only go 4" - 6" off the floor then you can skid around quite happily. Even better if you take off the landing gear rubbers. Here's my lad to prove it...
