Setting Up My Lama V4

Hi

I have just bought an E-Sky Lama V4 electric heli and was after some advice on setting up for hovering/basic flight.

Should the trims on the transmitter be enough to stop the heli from drifting in any direction or do i need to adjust the gain/proportion on the gyro?

Any help would be great thanks.

hi simon welcome to the forum.
the gain will only adjust how steady the tail is held
i.e to much and the heli will be dificult to turn
not enough and it will spin round freely.
the proportion will control the tail drifting round on its own.
the trims should be enough to adjust any sideways or back/ forwards motion.(if not you will need to do some mechanical adjustment)
throttle trim should always be at its lowest setting
give me ten mins and ill type out how to adjust it all

to start hover the heli.
looking from the tail of the heli
if it drifts sideways.and the trim is not enough to control it. center the trim....pop off the ball link on the left servo arm. if the heli is drifting right..shorten the rod(screw the loop on further). half a turn and retry hovering if its drifting left lengthen it.
if the heli is drifting forward center the trim pop off the right hand ball link and shorten the rod...backwards lengthen it.... remember half a turn at a time. be patient and you will get it hovering steady with no trim needed at all.

now the tail. hover the heli it should now be in a nice steady hover if the tail drifts right with no input.. land the heli turn the proportion pot anti clockwise very slightly.left drift turn clockwise..then disconect the battery..reconect and re-hover. small adjustments be patient. once the tail dosen't drift...apply input to the rudder and release if the heli continues to turn slightly then slowly settles add gain. if it is reluctant to turn and wags reduce gain.( you can do this without disconnecting each time)

Very informative post.
I'm a complete beginner at RC heli. I got a 'Lama V4' few recently.
I've been able to briefly steady hover with no inputs, after which heli starts to drift and I have to use trims. The drifting is random.
Is this normal ? If not how to fix it ?

yes i always start a new flight with trims centered and go from there! if you are patient and get the setup right you will only need rudder trim as the battery is used up!

Thanks Simon for starting the thread and thanks Boggy for your nudge in the right direction, I've used your tips to setup my CX2, the Heli's not perfect yet but its so much better than it was, I was very surprised how much adjustment it actually needed to get some sort of control, I adjusted everything till it began to Hover in a much more user friend way. Had to remove the training gear though, just wouldn't respond properly to the adjustments till I did.

I just spent my first ten minutes flying time and it was great cant bring the Heli toward me yet though, just like a fish out of water.

just be patient and remember one adjustment may affect the other so it takes time to get it just right!

Hi again. I have followed the tips provided and it is getting better but i have a couple of further questions. Should the swash plate be flat ie horizontal to the floor' and also how should i set the balance bar on the rotor. Should the bar keep the rotor, again, horizontal or should the rotor be offset. Thanks in advance.

yes the swash should look level. but test fly it and set your links to how it flys,thats more important.
only adjust the flybar link if the top blades are out of track.(hover the heli at eye level a look to see if the top blades look like one) if one is higher than the other adjust the link 1/2 a turn and try again if its worse go back 1/2 then 1/2 more till you get them as close as possible

Cheers boggy, got it running great now, better than when i first had it. It hovers lovely. Now for my next question. When im flying it, certain manouvres make the helicopter dip, as if its losing power so i have to up the "revs" to compensate. Is this normal or can i tweak something to alter this. If im flying over something it makes it difficult because you dont know if its going to drop or not(Hence another crash)

yes mate this is normal(but should be controlable) forwards/backwards/left/right will all make it drop slightly. also if you yaw right it will drop left it will climb.you just have to get used to balancing it with more throttle. great practice for a bigger heli outdoors!!!

Dear All,

first I would like to thank you all for your help.

I too have a lama V4 and I have some serious problems. I just installed all the alluminium parts which come as un upgrade. The problem is that i tried to use a guide i found in a forum, to level my swash plate. unfortunatelly i didnt notice that this guide was for another heli the CX2. As a result, i move the servo arms to another possition. I was stupid enough not to mark the original position of the arms. Now i cannot get the thing to fly. It is all over the place. I cant remember the position of the arms, neither how much the ball links should be unscrewed. Does anyone have any advice on this? Could someone upload a photo of their nicely setup V4(sevro section)?
