  • Jr 9x 2 and 2.4 module vs Dx9

    Hi to all
Me again I just seem to keep asking questions !!!!!!!!
Anybody out there using a jr 9x2 witha 2.4 ghz module ???? If so how are you finding it ?? I have been looking at the dx9 and when its out I have been told itl be around 400 -500 quid !!A little out of my price range!!! I was wandering if the jr 9x2 and a 2.4 module would be a more cost affective alternative
I also like the Dx7 but wander if I would be limiting myself in the way of channels as I progress in the hobbie.
Also Im now the proud owner of a raptor 50 titan and cant wait to get airbourne after xmas !!!! wish i did this years ago I much prefer it to flying planks !!

Must say I've been toying with the module aproach.
I use multiplex radios due to their excelent programing for my gliders.
A company in the usa do a module for my radio but it wont be legal over here so I think I'm going to have to stay with 35 megs & IPD ppm for now.

With the dedicated set you will get a few advantages, it will be neater, you'll get twice the resolution and the wrong model feature that will not boot the RX with the incorrect model selected.

The Spektrum module for the 9xii is a bit clumbsy - there is a bolt sticking out of the back with a trailing wire that connects to the aerial - I would be concerned about breaking it off on the bench.

And what Thomas said - lacks processing speed and model match. The 35MHz set was never originally designed to operate at 2.4GHz so this solution is a bit of a mis-match.

Inwoods have quoted me in the region of £350 for the 2.4GHz version when it comes next year. I paid £280 for my 35MHz version a couple of years ago (Tx only), so I rekon the price is in the right ball-park, provided the £350 includes a Rx.

Is there any concern over 2.4ghz becoming over crowded as its a shared frequency were as 35mgz is dedicated to model aircraft what do people think on that front??
I was settled on a DX7 till i realised my gyro was using three channels being a jr700t and i have a govenour,,csm revlock !! at the moment im down to seven ive put the revlock to manual mode saving that channel ,i just thought if im doing that on my first heli will i need more channels as i progress ?? if not DX7 it is then

i have the dx7 while waiting for the 9 channel version to be released.

i can say that i am only really using 7 channels anyway.

            1.throttle,
            2 elevator,
            3 aileron,
            4 rudder,
5 gear is governor speed selector,
            6 pitch,
7 aux 2 is the gyro rate h/h selector.

only channel ive was using before was for the on board battery checker, now its plugged in the spare slot on the governor.

so its only the snobbery down the field that makes me want the 9 channels version.

not really true as i'd like to have a proper training switch for when i give lesson. the training switch isnt very good on the dx7.

so to answer your question i would stick to the DX7, its a great little radio, not really sure i want to up grade to the 9 now

Yes, I'm a little concerned that the 2.4 GHz channel is a free-for-all, but I also understand that the technology has a massive number of sub-frequencies to switch between at any one time, so it is unlikely to become a real-life problem.

I'm sure when the JR 9xii 2.4 GHz set comes out, it will be available, or be supplied with a matching 9 channel Rx.

                      Yes.

If you can afford it and can wait then go for the DX9, the feel of the 9x is much nicer and even the futaba lot prefer it, it is much easier to program and has other features that you may end up wanting one day, plus a proper training switch.

Nothing wrong with JR gyros if you can be bothered to set them up properly, I think you can loose one of the leads if you need to, well I think I did on my old 7000.

My lad has been using modules in a PCM 10 since the middle of the year. He used them at the Nats this year, and so far it has proven rock solid. I've been using a DX-7 in an AirSkipper, and again, it has proven totally solid so far.

As someone earlier in the thread said, you don't get all the benefits with the modules, but you are certainly no worse off than you were on 35 MHz!

The reason for the ugly aerial connector is a legal requirement to keep the aerial a minimum distance from the body in normal use. This means the aerial has to go in the position originally occupied by the 35 MHz aerial, and that measn the ugly connector - unless you want to perform radical surgery on your Tx!

The Tranny doesn't balance as well without the long aerial, but watch you don't damage that connector if you choose to use a tray!

2.4 GHz receivers are slightly more voltage sensistive than 35 MHz, and take longer to recover from "brown-outs". This isn't an issue provided you are using a good, heavy-duty switch harness and a good battery pack. But it will show up any weaknesses in that area.....!
                          Pete

No matter how much you push the envelope, it'll still be stationery.

I've been using the module in my PCM9X II since they became available and haven't noticed any difference in use between this and my DX7, although the 9X is much better to program and use.

I didn't like the large angled connector on the back of the module either so spent about £5 on a Blade CX aerial and modified it myself in around 10 minutes, the aerial lead has a connector which pops straight on to the modules board, all I needed extra was a rubber grommet to fill the hole in the module. I've been told that the Blade CX2 aerial is even better.

                              Nice mod Steve.

Think I may do that myself as I can't see me stumping up for the 2.4 set when it arrives as my PCM9X2 plus module works fine just looks like a dogs dinner

Mind you I see JR are releasing a Gold coloured 35mhz 9X2 with a backlight soon so i guess there is still mileage in 35Mhz
