  • Pitch settings

    Hi guys and gals,

Just a quick question about pitch curve settings: I'm a relative beginner. I can fly around relatively comfortably (outside when there's little wind!) and hover comfortably tail-in and side on and not so comfortably nose-in with my MSRX and also with most helis in Phoenix. I also have an FBL Trex 250 that I'm able to hover tail-in pretty comfortably, although it is a twitchy little bugger. Unfortunately space constraints at the moment dictate that I'm not really able to go much bigger than this.

Anyway, the question is, am I best off at this point setting my pitch curve to -2 at low stick, +3 at mid, +8 at high to give increased resolution (and therefore control) or should I stick with -12 low, 0 mid, +12 high as eventually this is going to be what I need to be using and it's best to not have to "unlearn"?

    Any opinions?

    Thanks!

    I say 12/0/-12

Its what I started on and now flying anyhting else just feels plain weird and doesnt inspire me with any confidence at all.

+1 on that. Although maybe just 10 degrees.

You certainly want 0 degrees middle stick. +10 at the top and -10 at the bottom (or whatever pitch you feel comfortable with. 11degrees is good). It can be a difficult transition from your settings to the ones you would use for sport flying etc, but necessary, and less of a learning curve if done now

I also went with the long term option of starting on what I was planing to use eventually i.e. -12 0 +12.

I only fly inverted on the sim, because it is not really flying, just a delayed crash, but if I had one setting on the sim and one on the heli i wouldn't be getting the best out of the sim because the stick position for hover would be different.

Thanks for the replies - that certainly backs up my thinking. I am actually using -12/0/+12 for both sim and for real.

Just to be different, I would go with -3 to +10. Personally I found it easier to gain some confidence at these relatively soft settings and then gradually tweak the pitch towards full 3D settings. Although going for the full range straight from the off will probably mean you learn quicker, you are also more likely to ditch it.

I tend to run in normal mode -2,4, 0 +11,12 depending on model. You can always set the heli up for full pitch range and then just dumb down normal mode for those settings. From centre 0 stick upwards my curves are the same , its below centre stick that they tend to be different in normal to idle up

I've been caught out with this method once before. I flew my friends 500 as he wanted me to test it, got it in the air, flipped it over inverted and only 'just' had enough pitch on it with the stick at the very bottom. I couldn't figure it out and after changing my pants, checked the pitch and he has it set for about -5/-6 at bottom stick! Nightmare.

So you flipped it over inverted in normal mode? .. Like above I only run this setting in normal mode and run full collective range in idle up modes

Yep! I had a no-brain moment. My helis are all governed or flat curve in all modes. Now I always go through their settings with them before I fly anyone elses!

lmao ... We all been there at some point tho lol... TBH I found setting models up this way was easier incase I needed to actually do something that needed me to tame down my pitch curves and have always run the same since being taught and the fact for people just learning they dont drive the heli into the ground when they panic ..

+1 on that, although I know views differ as you can see from other responses. Members at our club advised me to go with -3 to +9 or 10. It's whatever you feel most comfortable with at the end of the day.

Brilliant, thanks everyone - I think at this point if I'm going upside down it's most definitely going to be accidental and is going to end in tears anyway - I'm going to go with -3/0/+12 for now in "normal" even though I've not yet ploughed it into the ground by whacking the collective down yet

I fly mine at -11 0 +11 in idle 1 & 2, but normal I would say -3 is not enough. In wind it will be hard to get down, try -5 or -6.
