Personally i started out with a clone for the simple fact that if i was ever to crash i wouldn't be so pained for loosing a lot of money. My two sense is that the clone i had was a ". . . . ." and i have to say i liked it, learnt a lot on it. However once i felt comfortable enough to upgrade i bought a Trex and everything changed build quality mainly among other things like flight precision. Like someone mentioned with clones you get what you pay for so what you end up spending depends on how committed you are to the hobby, i would just buy a quality machine in the first place and handle it with care until you master that bad boy

I am just starting out in this hobby but from the outset was advised against clones. They may be cheap but others have already described the downfalls of this. I would strongly advise down the second hand trex450/500 route. There have been several 450's for around the 160-180 mark and a dx6 should be had for 50-60. You will also find that the second hand 450's will come with a few spares inc lipos etc.

Seems false economy to buy a cheap clone.

thanks for all your replys guys, so its best just to splash out on a blade 450 rather than buy a cheap clone ?

The Blade 450 is very good and customer service from Horizon Hobby is excellent if you have a problem, but the build quality isn't as nice as the Trex 450. I'd go second hand Trex 450 (sport or pro) and DX6i, if you keep your eye on the for sale section you'll get both for the price of a new Blade 450/DX6i combo. Parts for both Helis are about the same but Trex has more carbon fibre so will be stronger than the Blade.

The three options are all very good in their own way. Blade 450, cheap or better 450 clone, secondhand or new trex 450. The Blade 450 isn't that different to a trex 450. Many of the parts can be moved from the Blade to the Trex if you decide to go that way. I found the tail bearing wore a hole in the housing on my very cheap (£40 450 clone) I replaced it with the Blade 400 upgrade from my Twister Storm. Performance is the sum of the whole though and that includes the pilot. The main thing is to find your own limit and and keep pushing it. The harder you push the faster you progress, but enjoyment is much the same whatever your ability. Practice is what counts with helis and sims are very good but the real thing feels different because it costs money and time to fix, this causes most people to find it more difficult than the sim.

Do use cheap fibreglass blades though. As far as I know these are only available for the Trex and clones. £3 a pair is not to bad. Also get a few main shafts, feathering shafts and flybars.

You also need to decide whether or not to go for plastic parts or metal.
