  • Please recommend me a battery!

    Hello all!

I have dug out my old Century Hummingbird v4, and remembered my issues with batteries! The flight times were always poor, and I know this is not a motor issue as it has been replaced.

I do not know a great deal about batteries, but please recommend me any battery that will give a good flight performance. The stock batteries were 600mAh NiMH 7-cell pack, but I would prefer to go down the LiPo route.

I have a HexTronik HX8080 LiPo charger, and also a Multiplex Multicharger LN-5014 charger.

    Thank you,

    Andy.

    Hey.

From memory of my long and fun times flying a Hummer, the NiMh packs where 9.6 volts and so a nice 2s LiPo of 800-1000 mah would be great. You'd get a constant 7.5 - 8 volts for the majority of the flight and be flying for a lot longer.
A trick with the Hummingbirds was to trim 20mm off the end of each blade, this raised the head speed slightly and made the FP machine a bit nicer to fly.

As for packs, Opti-Power do some in the range you are after from memory. Ideally check the weight of the stock battery and aim for a little under that weight in a LiPo. The model will feel better with it.
The only concern would be motor temperatures, as you'll be flying for longer keep an eye on these temperatures and maybe fit the heatsinks to help.

Have a look at the Tipple range from Giant Cod or even better the GensAce from electriflyer.co.uk. If in doubt phone up Chris Dorling or email him. GensAce look about as good as OptiPower but without a guarantee.(But half the price) I am happy to test an Optipower pack if absolutely necessary.

Thanks very much for the info. I will get a 2s LiPo - would this be a battery you were referring to? OptiPower Lipo Battery 850mAh 2S1P 30C : OPR8502S

          Hey.

You're welcome buddy. Your topics brought back a lot of very good and funny memories, as I flew for CenturyUK for 10 years and had a ball with the old Hummers ;-)

Yeah that will be great, if anything you'll notice the weight difference between this and the old NiMh pack straight away. You can of course buy cheaper packs and for this size and application you probably won't notice any difference in performance, but looked after it should give you many hours of fun.
Just remember to set your timer, as you'll have so much fun you'll not want to land!

Definetly if you have a spare set of blades try cutting off 20mm from the tips, as it makes the model much more fun with a slightly higher head speed.

Thunder Power if you are rich, Gens Ace if you are patient
Both brands are very reliable and will give you long hours of pleasure with your bird
Don't know Optipower's batteries, but it seems that they are successful in UK
