  • Is my plan any good or just cr4p?

Hello everyone. Thanks for a great forum
I was bought a Syma S107G for Christmas and I got the heli bug - like you all I guess?
I soon realised I needed a 4 channel heli and got a mini Twister scale co-axial on the advice of my local shop which I absolutely love. I can't believe you can get so much for your £45. Whilst I think it is fairly robust it just feels cheap and plasticky although it looks great in the air and is easyish to fly. I have spent a bit of money on repairs already. I hardly crash it these days but a motor has burnt out now and I am just feeling like I want something more robust and reliable.
I decided I want to get a decent computerised radio and progress through various models (probably all E-flite blades) by getting bind and fly ones and using a simulator to help me learn. I expected to get an mCX2 coaxial and then an mSRX but my local shop said the small fixed pitch single blades are not recommended and I should just go straight to a CP 400 size.
I want to fly in my home though or maybe in the local village hall so I want something smaller. I guess the mCPX V2 fits the bill but I just can't bring myself to press the buy button. I love the idea of it but the stuff I have read leads me to think it's too manic for the house and a beginner like me. Such as they can have your fingers off (I only have 9 left due to my other hobby - motorbikes) and make big holes in the house! But now I am thinking I would prefer to learn properly on a CP heli rather than working through various fixed pitch models.
So, I have ordered a Phoenix simulator and a DX6i transmitter. The question is, do I go for the mCPX2 or work my way through easier models and gradually build up experience? I recently read about dumbing it down using the DX6i and basically making it fly like an FP, do you think it is feasible in your experience?
    HELP!

I went straight for the mCPx, Dx6i and the Phoenix SIM with no real previous experience. It took me ages to get setup correctly but this forum is the place to ask for help!

After about a month I can happily hover Tail in when indoors [in a tight space] and when in the sports hall or when outdoors I am starting to practice nose in. I do loads more on the SIM as it doesn't cost £££ when you crash.

As for flying indoors the max head speed of the mCPx is quick but I have my doubts that it could take a finger off. I have flown it into my arm which hurt but I didn't have any wounds to show off! Using the dx6i you can setup two flying modes 1) Normal mode and 2) idle up mode (also known as stunt mode), for each mode you can change the setting for how you want to fly and once setup you just need to flick a switch on your RX to change between the two modes….. For example…..

    1) Normal mode you can have a low head speed, flattish pitch curve and a high expo, this would make the mCPx very docile and you can almost bang the sticks all over the place for very little movement.

    2) Stunt mode this could be setup for max head speed, a pitch curve that suits 3d flying and have no expo so that even a slight movement of your sticks and the heli will shoot across the room.

I would highly recommend the mCPx as it can take a beating when learning and is cheap to fix or upgrade, I even had mine outside in very gusty weather yesterday which I wouldn’t want to do with a more expensive heli…..

    Best of luck fellow beginner

my opinion is forget the coaxials, you will soon get bored with them, you will quickly learn to fly it and want to move on, the msr is a lot of fun and will teach you orientations but i dont think you can beat the mcpx

Thanks for all your help everyone. I'll probably fly a few different models in Phoenix to try them out but I suspect I'll get the mCPX fairly soon. I want something that I can fly in the house so I need to decide between an msrx and an mcpx.
I think I enjoy doing all the research and deciding as much as I do the flying ;-)
I'm really interested in the idea of getting an mcpx (that is too difficult for my current skill level) and dumbing it down using a computerised radio to something more akin to an msrx and gradually returning the settings to normal as I get better.

Gaz, sounds like a good plan to me. You can dumb the mcpx down so it behaves like a fixed pitch with DX6i. Then, as you say, work your way up with it.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I now have the DX6i and the Phoenix flight simulator and I have dumbed down the settings in the transmitter by following a youtube video. The mCPX is certainly fly-able now although I still keep crashing of course! I'm looking out for a good deal on the mCPX bnf now.
                Cheers.
