It gives you a perpendicular reference point on the mainshaft for getting the swash plate level. There are many available that are model-specific, but I choose to use a universal one that fits all helis from 450 size up to 90 size - the magnetic purple K&S one.
The best ones are the ones which slide onto the main shaft (you have to remove the head), then there are three points which you use to line up the swashplate perfectly level with the main shaft.
You can also use end points or flybarless settings to check both negative and positive pitch.
The best tool you can have and a essential one at that for a decent flying heli.
