    >> what is the best way of moving forward
force yourself to abandon tail-in. You need to push yourself out of the "comfort zone", gently but persistently. Ask yourself, do I want to enjoy relaxed flying or do I want to make progress. Those are your options, and they are mutually exclusive.

Learn to hover confidently at any angle and height, and you'll have an unfair advantage over all the wannabe-3D-whiz-kids who want to run before they can even crawl

I just don't get why everyone finds the sim so boring to be honest. I hear people call it a game.... its not a game. Its flying!!!! I love flying so i love the sim too. I just get really into it and find it a pleasure to do. I know it is not the real thing, but it aint far off if you use a bit of imagination. I would not be where i am without constant sim time. But i do accept it is not the same for everyone. I suppose it comes down to how driven you are to succeed.

One of the best/informative sites/training I've seen & not a sim in sight.

        RADD'S SCHOOL OF ROTARY FLIGHT?

You'll crack it. We've all been there.
You can teach a man everything. Apart from experience.

Perfect it on the sim the best you can then get out there and do it! You won't harm a mCPX much, it's perfect for learning.

Age is no barrier, look at Bert Kamerer...he aint no spring chicken & he started late. Having the time to get out & fly regular is a huge help & practice everything on a simulator first. Treat the sim as a learning tool & 'not a game' & think of each crash as real. You have to have a strong determination to succeed & nail skills to benefit from the sim & not lose interest. Whatever your goal is you need to have that same goal on the sim. Flying a heli which you will be able to afford the repair cost will reduce the 'fear factor' that prevents most from trying a new move for real. You can progress without a sim but it will either take longer or be far more costly & unless you have a fair disposable income the cost could see you grounded for longer than your in the air. I myself have progressed imo far slower than a lot (i began the same time as Laurence for example) but everything from basic hovering i learnt on the sim first, FMS then Phoenix.

I do actually have an atom fp for indoor practice but i find it a bit dull, I have tried the mcpx indoors but it just causes too much damage to my walls and means I get nagged at all the time.
Sodding weather has put paid to any stick time today as well as the wires breaking off my power lead meaning I had to butcher my serial charge lead for the plug.
Roll on summer so that I can still get outside when littleun is in bed.

                      dull?

assuming it's not any worse than the Walkera 4#3 I've owned, you can do
                      - hover at 1 o'clock
                      - hover at 2 o'clock
                      - hover at 3 o'clock
                      ...
                      - hover at 11 o'clock
                      - the same as high as the room allows (looking up)
                      - hovered piros in both directions (slowly piroing, one revolution every 10..20 seconds. This is very hard at first).

                      And then:
Start the figures below very slowly, hovered, without building up momentum. If you've got the hovering under your belt, no one stops you from hovering a figure 8 etc.
                      - clockwise circles.
                      - counterclockwise circles
                      - backwards circles
                      - side-in circles (both sides, both directions)
                      - figure 8s (forwards, backwards, side-in, both sides & directions)

If you want to make progress and have a bit of space, a sub-micro fixed pitch can take you a long way.
That's at least what I did.
And if you think this sounds absurdly difficult and will take an eternity to learn: Yes, that's right so get started now.

Well, personally I don't really care if I succeed in my flying or not, but I really like simulator and don't really understand why people who like to fly helis don't like the sim as well. It's probably usual phenomena of liking the idea of doing something, but not liking doing the thing itself.

20 minutes of simulator a day, practising, you will progress immensely and save a lot of money.
If you really can't get yourself to do it and enjoy it, you are for one big stressful ride.. unless you can get somebody to buddy box you all the time.

Simulators changed everything, you can learn without it but you will progress much slower than someone who uses it regularly and you will crash more (sometimes much more).

This http://www.chadrg.com/ will help - it's really good and progression from lesson to lesson makes sense (early inverted and backwards is a good thing), just don't expect to spend a day and the get proficient with lesson content. May take weeks/months.

p.s. I am not sure what age has to do with it, you guys sound like old farts

Have you considered instruction? Paul Heckles is an hour from you, a couple of hours there will broaden your mind to the possibilities. Rather than repeat it, have a search on here for the virtues of attending a flight school, look for Paul Heckles or Dave Fisher/Flyin Fish comments.

well, had to put my money where my mouth is and got out the 4#3.
I managed a couple of backwards figure 8s in the living room before (I think) the tail motor finally gave in. Also tried a funnel with speed and whacked it into the curtains
Anyway, don't expect smooth flying. What I'm proposing looks more like the heli is taking an obstacle course, one step at a time.

Once I can hover at any angle, I can hover all the figures as slowly as I like, and thus the "learning curve" should be manageable.
