  • Pheonix v3.0 setup

    Hi Guys,
Thanks for my welcome to heliaddicts the reason I joined this forum was to gain expert advice on the art of RC Heli flying I have had a couple of co-axial helis but want to progress to the real birds. I have bought myself the Phoenix v3.0 sim as well as the Spektrum DX6i I also went as far as to get the Blade 120sr as a starter heli, the trouble is i'm not to sure how best to set up my phoenix with the DX6i for the complete beginner, I want to practice with the sim before I venture to the real bird .I would also like to know what would be the best setup for my DX6i for the 120sr for a complete novice. I hope when someone has time they could help me with this as I can't wait to get into this hobby big time I’ve waited a long time to be in this position & raring to go I know I can't rush but any imput would be much appreciated many thanks Paul

Not My Post but this will help.

This setup will allow the use of throttle hold and IU using the same switches as you would use for your real halicopter. Pitch Curves, Throttle Curves and D/R & Expo can also be setup to how you configure your real heli. It is important that you follow the sequence in order for the calibration to work correctly in Phoenix.
To make reading easier the DX6i Menu items are in BOLD, Lists that are found within menus are RED and values associated with the list items are GREEN.

There may appear to be a lot of steps here but it really doesnt take that long

1.) Choose an empty slot from the MODEL SELECT menu on the DX6i

    GOTO SETUP LIST

2.) Scroll down to COPY/RESET and reset the memory for that model

3.) Scroll to MODEL TYPE and set model to HELI

4.) Scroll down to the REVERSE menu and check that all channels are set to N (this should be the case after resetting the model in step 2)

5.) Scroll down to the SWASH TYPE menu and check that it is set to 1SERVO90 (this should be the case after resetting the model in step 2)

    GOTO ADJUST LIST

6.) Scroll down to the D/R&EXPO menu and check AILE, ELEV and RUDD are set to 100% and EXPO is set to INH for all 3 channels (this can be re-set to the desired levels later)

7.) Scroll down to the TRAVEL ADJ menu and check that all values are set to 100% in both directions (this should be the case after resetting the model in step 2)

8.) Scroll down to the SUB TRIM menu and check that all values are set to 0 (this should be the case after resetting the model in step 2)

9.) Scroll down to GYRO menu set SW to GYRO. Set position 0 to 0% and set position 1 to 100%.

    10) Scroll down to THRO CUR menu and check that NORM is set to 0,25,50,75,100 and HOLD is set to 0. Change all points of STUNT to 100% i.e. a flat line.

11.) Scroll down to PITC CUR menu and check that NORM, STUNT and HOLD are set to 0,25,50,75,100 (NORM will be changed after calibrating in Phoenix).

12.) Check that MIX1, MIX2 and set to INH and REVO MIX values are all set to 0

    PHOENIX CONTROL ASSIGNMENTS

13.) Go into Phoenix and select SYSTEM/ YOUR CONTROLS from the top menu. Scroll down to the Spektrum list, highlight the DX6/DX6i option and then click the edit button.

14.) Set the controls up as per the attached image (ensure the detailed controls box is selected at the top of the window and take note of which controls are inverted). You should find that the default controls are the same. The only difference in the image compared to the Phoenix default is that I have the govener mapped to the FLAP/GYRO switch of the DX6i so I can disable the govener on electric helis.
If you chose to make a change to the default controls Phoenix will pop up a warning window telling you that you cannot change the default settings and it will make a copy. Once you have made any desired changes click finish and close the YOUR CONTROLS window.

    PHOENIX CALIBRATION

15.) Turn all switches on the DX6i to off and adjust the throttle/pitch so it is at mid stick.

16.) Select SYSTEM/ YOUR Transmitter from the top menu in Phoenix. Click the calibrate button on the popup window that appears and then click next on all the subsequent windows until you reach the window that asks you to move all sticks to their extents.

17.) Move all sticks to all extents and toggle the FLAP/GYRO switch on and off.

18.) Re-centre all sticks and set all switches to off. The orange bars fo channels 1,2,3,4 & 6 should all be centred. channel 5 should be off.

19.) Move the throttle up - Channel 1 should increase and channel 6 should decrease.

20.) Move each stick to its extent - the yellow bar should be at the top when the stick is at one extent and at teh bottom for the other extent.

21.) Click the GYRO/FLAP switch down - There should be a full orange bar. The bar should dissapear when the switch is flicked back up.

22.) Keep clicking next button and then finish button when it appears. Phoenix should now be fully working with the DX6i correctly.

    FINE TUNING

Now the calibration is done DR rates and Pitch and throttle curves can be set to the desired values (it is important this is done after the calibration !!)
For example I set my normal throttle curve to 0,40,85,85,58 and my normal pitch curve to 40,43,50,75,100 to match the settings I use on my blade 400.

I aslo set DR to 80% for AILE, ELEV and RUDD at positon 0 and 100% for position 1.

NOTE: If you do reset your T&P and DR rates you will need to set them back to the defaults stated in section 10 & 11 above if you have to re-calibrate. I have not yet had the need to recalibrate though so this should generally not be a problem.

Pauleley is spot on with that mate!

One of the things I did with my dx6i was to alter the throttle curve so that you only have real thrust in the top half of the stick with the 120sr, so you're not confusing your thumbs (I have mega dumb digits!)!
so as to mimmick the CP flying a bit............saying that, if you have pheonix then you'll be A'ok in the end mate..........
