  • Idle Up

    Hiya,

I've been carefully practising on my Twister Strom 3D for a few weeks now, probably getting on for about 15 flights. I can manage a half decent hover for long periods and have been hovering in the wind and slight gusts for the last few days.

When I first set up the transmitter I cable tied the idle up switch to stop me accidentally switching it on. To be honest the thought of flying Idle up scared the crap out of me.

Today I plucked up the courage to fly Idle up and all I can say is wow! The heli is so much more stable and easier to hover, it will pretty much hover hands off and even the gyro which I've so far found to be not very good seems to work so much better. I've just got to resist the temptation to pull full down cyclic when I get into trouble

Idle up is the best way to fly.

You should also set your throttle curve to flat 80% out of idle up mode - that will make it easier to fly and more like flying in idle up,

    I. Recommend to everyone to always fly in idle up. It's so much easier.

Grats mate. Progress is so rewarding. When I first got my MCPX I thought for sure when I flick that IU switch it's going to slice my face off. You'll be inverted in no time!

The step to idle up should be taken as early as possible. As most will tell you the heli will feel more stable with the higher headspeed. The only real difference is the noise. If you can adjust your throttle and pitch curves on your Tx you can setup a flat throttle cure at about 80-85% and your pitch curve to reduce the amount of negative pitch so that if you do get into trouble moving the lft stick down will not drive the heli into the ground.

it certainly is a good feeling the first time you fly around with the switch of doom on and you get your heli back in 1 piece saying that i havent flown my king 3 for a week now waiting on a new battery first one exploded when i tried to solder also waiting on someone who knows how to solder

I'd not recommend changing pitch curve. Leave it at default, -100/100 (or 0-100 on some radios).
The earlier you get used to not slamming throttle stick down and using throttle hold instead the better.
Idle up is all about pitch being negative/positive, so you can fly upside down etc.

When your not flying in idle up, when you move your collective stick, both the pitch of the blades and motors rpm will change in accordance with your throttle and pitch curves.
Usually for idle up a flat throttle curve is set (for example let's say 80%). So when you flick that IU switch, what ever you do with the collective stick the motors rpm isn't going to change. Providing you with constant power. But you'll need to remember to hit throttle hold of your helis about to hit the deck

This can be set up on most transmitters but Ive not come across a FF7 but I'm sure it's capable.
