Lipo question

Hi,

I am currently looking now at getting an inbetween heli to fill the gap between my MCPX and my yet to be built N2. I have done a lot of sim time and have flown the MCPX around an awful lot and I am quite happy with the progress. The original plan was to go straight to a .50 sized nitro hence the N2, however I was thinking and have now decided on going for the new Blade 450x when it's released as it is fairly cheap and the BNF option looks good. Also when I crash which I'm sure I will it will be cheaper to repair than the N2. Now for my question, the blade 450x uses 11.1 v Lipo 3S pack rated at 2200mah. However I have seen 3S 11.1 packs rated at 5000mah, could I use these packs and if so would they give longer flight times?

No! the 5000mah pack will be too heavy and too large to fit in a 450 size machine. The 2200mah should be fine for the 450 size, i run these in my trex 450. 5000mah packs run in Trex 550 size machines and double up to make 12s in trex 700 size machines (90's). Look at the dimensions of the supplied or reccomended battery, you want a 30c rated 2200mah or if you can find a larger mah battery of the same "c" rating with similar dimensions it should fit, but best to have the machine infront of you first to see exactly what would fit, or ask here what people are running in their Blade 450's, Ian.

I have seen 3S 11.1 packs rated at 5000mah, could I use these packs and if so would they give longer flight times?

Absolutely no chance of using a 3S 5000mAh pack in a 450 class. Reason being as the mAh (capacity) of a pack goes up, so does its size and weight, and 5000mAh would just be physically be too big, plus the extra weight would make it big time nose heavy.

The largest 3S I suspect you might fit would be say 2600mAh.... but I'm only guessing here!

Not really. You will get 5 to 6 mins flights and that is long enough for the motor. The heli will need to cool down then. More batteries are a better option, especially lots of HK cheap ones for basic performance. Shorter flights will make the batteries last longer and you can charge them quicker if you stop charging when the current drops to 1 amp or so. This will also make them last longer. You could probably strap another battery underneath and it would probably take off. If this was a realistic option it would probably have been designed for bigger batteries. Slightly bigger batteries may fit, but it depends on the performance you want. Good performance needs higher C rating batteries, which are also heavier. Everything is a compromise. In general the more you spend on a battery the better it is, but it is not a guarantee. I've found Tipples to be good. Optipower have a lot of followers for better performance.

Ok many thanks for the replies guys, looks like I will stick with the 2200mah packs I will get two or three , in terms of a charger which would you guys recommend on a budget of £70.
