  • Do I need a new motor?

Weird problem with my MSR-X. Quite often, in mid flight, the head speed will halve and it just drops to the floor and then won't take off again. The only way to clear it seems to be to take the motor out, spin it up and then refit it.
Now, on takeoff, the motor frequently won't spin at all until full stick, where it bursts into life before violently crashing. Weird thing is, when it does that, there's no resistance to the blades, I can turn it by hand quite freely.
It's not had many flights, probably less than 50, could it really be the motor? if so, why is it fine most of the time?

    Any help appreciated

    Chris

You need to check things one at a time. Does it happen with all batteries for instance? It could be a faulty connector. Is the motor hot when it stops. If you leave it a few minutes does it work again? Is it ok on the first flight? Do you let it cool down between flights? Have you tried a drop of oil? Are the gears getting too close after a few minutes flying? If the mesh is too tight it will stop the motor. Is the esc getting hot and cooling down? Buying another motor is probably a good idea. It's one thing to check and rule out and you'll probably need another fairly soon anyway. Lipos don't last that long either.

Be careful with the fault reports as well. If a fault appears once, try to repeat it. Often things aren't as they first appear. Try to get a definite way of reproducing the fault. Taking a video with sound may be useful as well.

Thanks for that, it would appear to be the motor.
I visited a mate last night who has one and swapped motors with him, his motor works fine in my heli.
I will try a drop of light oil in it, can't do any harm and if it works it will be a useful spare.

I must admit I don't let the motor cool between flights, is that something I should be doing?

Give it a couple of minuits if you can it will last a hell of lot long before it needs replacing even a minuit is better than nothing ...

Runing em burns brushes out witch looses power and eventually your syptoms too too much heat will de magnatise the magnets wich will again make it sluggish

Thanks for that, I'll try to be a bit less impatient then to get it back up!

If you read the Scorpion info the say to oil every six flights..... Oil does work though and cooling down. Glad you're sorted.

Must admit I had no idea, I'd never oiled mine...

It does actually fly now, after dribbling some oil through it although it's noticeably less powerful than it should be. The new motor will be here Tuesday so I'm going to leave it alone until then.
At least the old motor does run so it will serve as a diagnostic spare if nothing else.

              Thanks for the replies,

Diagnostic bits are very useful. You can use them with new bits to prove that the new bits work before they destroy something good.
