Scared of flying circles - need help please.

Also hapened to me. A thing that helped me is to apply a little of collective as the heli comes towards you. You will end up with a sort of corkscrew shape circle. Somehow mentally it was easy to me knowing the heli was gaining altitude and I had more time to correct any errors.

Also practice your nose in hover!

The way Dave Fisher taught me was to get all 12 clock points down properly in a stationary hover. Then, instead of doing it right in front of you, imagine a bigger clock face in front of you.


At 12 o'clock (far in front of you), hover at a 3 o'clock orientation. At 1 o'clock, hover at a 4 o'clock orientation. At 2 o'clock, hover at a 5 o'clock orientation, etc.

Don't fly the circle, just hold the appropriate orientation at points around the circle, and really lock it in at each one. Depending which way you do it, clockwise or anticlockwise, you'll be tail in or nose in at about 4-5 and 7-8 o'clock.

Do that in all winds, forcing the heli to a stop and locking in each orientation for a good hover at each point, teaches you to automatically correct at any point around the circle. For bonus points, while holding the cyclic off centre to the locked-in hover position, do a piro to prove you've really found the true locked-in point (if it spins off axis, you hadn't locked it in). Actually flying the circle after doing that for a month is no problem.

I bet that came out really confusing but it's really simple. Which is not to say it is easy!

Always feel 2 hours at FlyinFish (Uxbridge) is a good use of my £80, if only the weather was more predictable!

Oh, and remembering another tip from Dave, when flying them at speed it's all about keeping the boom horizontal. Still very hit and miss at full speed circles.. I wouldn't listen to me at all about how to do those

Your an hour away from Paul Heckles school of flying nr Swindon,you can face your demons there for 40 quid for an hour,use their models on buddy box.reckon you would only need an hour to break down the barrier

up untill 2 weeks ago i would be the same . went out got myself a mcpx and spent a few days nose in hovering in my living room then took my 450 out hovered for few secs hit idle up and off i went doing the 8`s ok not very clean but im getting there and some times ill do a few stall turns and other times i would just do half circle and then hold it in nose hover best £110 i spent on the mcpx now learning invered hovering with it and doing it bad lol best thing is total damnage so far was a cracked boom and landing skid and ive put it in full chat

Definately say the tuition is the way to go. I'll be going to see Dave fisher soon for some help. Just a shame I haven't been able to yet due to time issues.

If it's a less than perfect day, I've more often than not had the place to myself from dawn to dusk! After a couple of dozen packs you've learnt something, and also forgotten a lot, such as what your name is, where you live..

I booked a two hour sesh with a pro on Friday. It did not go as I had hoped, still can't fly circles. But I was still very happy with time spent. It turn's out my mental block is not just a small wall, it is reinforced concrete, that not even the dam busters could destroy.

What I did learn was I can't even fly a square or in fact hover in all orientation. I can't maintain a hover to the left, but have no problems to the right. During fig 8 I panic on the left circle when the nose reaches 4 o clock and right circle at 8 o clock.

So no more big air romps, I have dug out the old Raptor 50 and have gone back to basics. Learning to hover in all orientations. In hindsight if I had stuck with the basics during learning I would have progressed faster.

Tis human nature tho innit, hovering forever is boring and you just wanna see that heli fly by!

I've been learning to fly backwards on the Sim until the other day when I decided to see if I could hover inverted, now spent the last couple of days hovering inverted on there, still not good with flying backwards haha, tho inverted hovering does feel a damn load easier. I even tried it in the field today but it was too windy and I sent the heli into the grass. Back to flying backwards now, no more getting carried away.

Reading your post is a good reminder to nail the basics so thanks for taking the time to keep us updated!
