  • MCPX or Trex 450/Blade 450

    Hi guys,

I've been flying my msrx for a few weeks now and I have just got a dx6i and I am hooked!!!

Look at at my next heli, and am unsure whether to progress to an mcpx or a trex 450 or blade 450.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks

Hey there two very different heli's.

The MCPx is still tiny small so can be hovered in small spaces/indoors but outdoors it can be a little tricky. It's flybarless and collective pitch though so is a good way to get into that side of things. Best thing about it is if flying outside overrgrass a crash will usually mean just popping the main gear back up on the shaft and off you go. It does require a deft touch on the collective though but this will actually help improve your flying of other heli's.

The 450 is a lot larger and of course more stable. Not suitable for small spaces really and a Trex 450 crash will set you back about £30 a time depending how bad. The 450 is more capable but at a cost. The MCPx can do full 3d once you get the hang of it and is so much worry free fun.

Here's my thoughts. The mcpx is good fun, it'll teach you collective management skills that are required for a CCPM heli and they are robust so you could crash it a lot and it will just bounce back BUT imho they are very toyish. I have great fun with mine but the feeling I get doesn't compare to that of a larger heli. With a larger heli you get a much greater feeling of accomplishment. You try it on the mcpx then want to do it "for real"so to speak on your larger helis.
In an ideal world I'd say both an mcpx and a 450 but I know times are hard and funds are tight. I personally would go for a sim and a 450. As long as you take the sim seriously for a spell each time you use it (like trying tail in / nose in hovering etc for about 10 minutes before messing about) you'd be ready for a 450.
      Just my thoughts.

I have to agree with Scotvar. I have both MCPx and 450 Pro, perfect combo!

you also have to remember, a 450, altho more stable, is a lot more scary to fly compared to your msr or even an mcp x - so more care is required when you fly it.

Exactly ... spooling up a 450 size is an intimidating thing if you've only experienced the msrx type ... there is a lot of energy going on and takes more nerve ....
I have an mcpx and its a hoot ... the fear factor is still there (since its a 'real' heli not a sim) but flying over reasonable grass means you can crash 20 times (gentle crashes) and it keeps ticking and learing the finger points of throttle / pitch curves and DR/expo etc all means you learning valuable lessons that will translate to a larger bird.

I had a 450 first and made a mistake on my 2nd battery and cost me £100 in replacement parts .... and its been out of commission for a couple of weeks while i accumulated all the spares and plucked up the courage to attach the fix ...

The mcpx i've bought a spare set of blades (just in case) and some more batteries but other than that i've run through 10-12 batteries so far and love it and don't fear a throttle-held crash .... best £100ish quick i've spent

I would recommend (if you can afford it) a Sim - at least try and find someone near you with one so you can try it out before you buy but i've found that in these winter days with higher winds its been useful to hover in the sim .... as long as you be honest with yourself and take it seriously and not 'play it like a game'

            Good luck!

Its funny not more than a couple of years ago the mSR was your last eflite stop before the 400. Now those cunning marketeers have create a new band the micro collective pitch. If I was you, I would go down the 450 route. If your not planning on leaving the living room for a cold park anytime soon then the mCPX is for you, but if you want to throw something around in a fair wind go for the 450.

The other way of looking at it is can you afford the ~£30 crash costs of a 450? To some its little more than a few pints down the pub, to others its something that would need to be saved for. If you can manage it then go for a 450.

              Good luck either way.

The big heli small heli debate always goes on. I think the really important question is where are you going to fly it?

Its just not sensible and is dangerous to take a 450 or bigger heli to your local park; especially when inexperienced. Any park always has dog and kids and its a recipe for trouble. If your going the club route and are getting help then great but if your not then I say mcpx all the way. Its the only safe route.

I never liked the toy analagy. Its a very capable heli but just small. Make it brushless and see what it can do!
Its in no way a toy and you can have a heap of fun and fly it almost anywhere. It wont cost you time and money when you crash. My advice is buy one learn from it and then you can probably sell it for close to what you paid for it (assuming you want to sell it.. I have a few and will never part with them ).

                Good luck.

I'd say master an mcpx before even attempting a large scale 450.

The mcpx mAh kook small and feeble bjt it is not. it's a robust CP heli, just small in size but not in speed

I've gone down the mcpx route after a lot of advice. Can quite safely say that it is a great little heli, very fast when you want it to be and very robust. Only had one major crash, managed to flick the magic switch before it went in and only the main gear slipped - cost of repairs £0.

Going to master this before going anywhere near buying something bigger. Phoenix is a great addition, the mcpx is not great on the sim, I have some custom ones on there now, still not brilliant though. Some of the other models I find very good for sim practice though.

Well eventually I will be wanting to go to 450 size. But I have no experience of CP helis. I think I may go for the mcpx for now, following the advice given here. I can use it in the garden and at the park on an okay day I suppose. I'd rather crash an mcpx than a 450, especially in the park!!! It's a bloody big park mind!

I'd say Trex 450 and Phoenix simulator. Don't bother with mcpx unless you already know how to fly, otherwise it will teach you how to fly a mcpx and nothing else.

if you wait.. you'll never learn coz you'll always be forever waiting for something to fly.
