Newbie - 1st heli etc

Hi Folks
Ive always wanted an R/c heli and now I have 2. A mate gave me a 4 channel Lama but I very quickly began braking blades so just ordered a pack of 60 from Hong Kong! That should keep me in flight for a bit longer. Then yesterday I stumbled on an ad in the local rag for a Nexus 30. Im more than aware that this is WAY OUT of my league at the mo, but for the the small sum he was asking, with all the gear, I couldn't refuse. The guy I bought it from was very nice and showed me around it and is very happy to help me set it up etc when the time comes. He did say it needs a new starter shaft, so will be looking for advice there.
Looking into some of the other forums, looks like parts can be an issue. Ive got plenty of mates around with lathes etc so no problem making stuff but am I crazy? Just wondering wether I ought to shelve it/ sell it and get something more manageable for now..

So, I need to get the hang of the Lama first...

I think you've jumped the gun a bit there :L

Personally, I would have bought a small decent (top brand) heli, just to get the basics of a proper heli, if I were you I would have bought a DX6i and a Blade MCPX or MSRX.

You most definitely are crazy to have bought a Nexus 30 as your first heli.


I think you should sell the Nexus and get a Flight simulator like Phoenix and get a DX6i with it, this will enable you to practise without the cost of crashes.

Have you got a sim ?

Flight sim has deffo helped me. Best £80 I spent also. At least you can think about why you crashed it instead of doing the long walk to the wreckage in stunned silence (or vocal air blue turning).

Problem with having big heli lurking in the wings is it could tempt you before you are ready.

definatly a sim. I bought myself a cp 400 sized heli for my first one and this was way more than I could manage with no previous experience. Sim helped loads spent a few days on it and can fly the real thing around now, not perfectly but its better than smashing it every time like I was before. Phoenix worked great for me.

So decided Ill sell up the big one, totally pointless having it at this stage lol.

whoa dont poo poo the nexus so fast Bunker! look on ebay there are plenty of spares available.Find a local club and take a trip down there ,talk to people,ask them to look it over even test fly it. its not as big a step as you imagine, with help and plenty of practice you'll be flying it in no time Newbury is quite a good area for help there's guys from swindon/reading /basinstoke on here that could be just the people your seeking

Forgot to say that virtually any heli can help you learn as long as you SET IT UP for learning. The pitch needs to be tamed down for starters and the throttle curve adjusted for less agressive response.

Update, bought a Blade mcx2 from Gumtree (off a nice guy who flies a Bretling 1/3 scale), also bought the MSR off Davy Crockett on here. Thanks to them both for all their help. Just need a DX6i or DX7....

Complete Tosh, nothing wrong with the Nexus 30 as a first heli, i started with a raptor 30 as my first heli as i am sure lots of people have and plenty have started with a Shuttle which is a 30 size machine

why do you think we use 30 size machines as an introduction to helis at the flying school, far more stable, can fly in much more wind and lasts for 30mins on a tank which while youre learning is much better than having to land and charge a battery every 5 mins

yes the nexus is a bit of a dated design nowadays, but about 5 years ago you wouldnt of started with anything else but a 30 size machine as good cheap reliable electric helis werent about
