My advice on the radio is buy a nice used 35Mhz Tx and Rx, preferably a 7 channel or 9 channel. Ask about at your local club as best thing is to get one that is still in use and working well. One with a module would be good (so you can ugrade to 2.4G later) but only if you can pick it up at a good price.

Lots of people are changing from 35 mhz to 2.4Ghz radios, so you could pick up a fairly new FF7 for example (that doesn't have a module).

Unlike Dave I just sold my 35Mhz and got a DX7. The FF7 tx went inside an hour via this site (always nice to sell good stuff where it'll be appreciated) and all the receivers just went for fairly good prices on fleabay.

I needed the 2.4Ghz for my little electric - 35 mhz is fine for a larger nitro heli.
