  • She FLIES !

The Align voltage dropper finally hit my doormat this morning so I hooked up the Robbe tail servo, tidied all the wires away and fitted the training UC to my Trex 450 SE V2.

No more excuses so it was out into the garden.

Spooled her up and waggled the sticks a bit once she was light on the skids. WTF fore and aft cyclic REVERSED . Fixed that and had another go.

After a number of bunny hops I managed to hover for all of 10 secs before I bottled out. The garden really is a bit on the small side for these early days.

Collective is VERY responsive. Cyclic is OK with 20% exponential rates.

Still shaking - what a rush

    Fantastic
Its such a great feeling when you get airborne, just dont get to impatient and enjoy, you can deaden the collective down in your swash menu as not to give so much pitch for your initial hops, good luck! shame the weather has turned tho

Awesome news. I am just about to start my build (when my bits arrive) so I have been following your threads keenly.

Out of interest, do all servo's need a voltage dropper? I am running a futaba S9650 for the tail?

Personally on my setup, HS65's, 401 gyro and S9650 tail servo, i have seen no need to fit a "voltage dropper". I have had no problems.

        Have fun!

Just to confirm I have the same setup and you won't need a voltage drop.

I only needed a voltage dropper because I am running the Robbe FS61 BB Speed digital servo on the tail. It is only rated for 4.8v but the Align ESC delivers 6v through its BEC. The voltage dropper sits between the gyro and the servo. All the rest of the electronics run happily at 6v (Spektrum AR6200 RX, Futaba GY401 gyro and 3 x Hitec 65MG swash servos).

The voltage dropper was a PIG to source. Finally tracked one down at a model train store in the USA. Took 8 days to get here.

Couldn't resist another flight in the garden this morning (beautiful sunshine ) but that collective really is way too fierce . Heli bounces around like a jack-in-the-box. Not helped by trembling fingers.

How exactly should I tone it down in the swash menu? The swash mix is currently Aileron=50%, Elevator=57% (these two to fine tune a level swash). Pitch=60% and exponential inhibited. I am running a 0,50,80,90,100 throttle curve and a 36,42,50,75,100 pitch curve which gives me a (measured) -2,-1,0,5.5,11 pitch. The idea was to use the same mid and high stick that I would (eventually) use with flight mode 1. Perhaps not such a good idea

Try with 5° at centre stick untill you are happy with hovering.

These values in the Swash menu govern the overall throw in each settings direction (aileron = left/right, elevator=forward/back), you don't use them to get the swash level. To ensure a level swash, you use end points and sub trims. Myabe I mis-read that...?

Great idea. Thats what I try to get people to do too.

How exactly should I tone it down in the swash menu?
You can reduce the overall amount of pitch available in the swash menu - reducing the Pitch value will reduce it equally top and bottom - although with your pitch settings, you won't notice much, if any, change at the bottom stick position. Try reducing the top to 9 or 10 degrees and see how you go with that - 11 degrees is quite a lot to be learning with.
                    Cheers,
                    Rob

OK - I put the aileron and elevator to 50% on the swash and dropped the pitch from 60% to 45%. It's MUCH better now - still get trembly fingers though . Thanks everyone.

(hey Leigh - I aim to get down to the field tomorrow p.m.)
