  • beginners assitance required with DX6i

    guys and gals,

this morning i received delivery of my shiny new DX6i wow, and all i can say is,it's slightly different to the Eflite standard TX isnt it?

    so many buttons and switches!

i have manged to bind my Blade 120SR to it no problem and everything seemed fine control wise until i took off!

i have now managed to smash another skid to pieces and another set of blades

the heli was all over the place and i'm guessing it needs trimming? is this trial and error?

i think i know how to trim using the black switches with the orange arrows beside and below the the main sticks on the TX but unsure which does what?

also are there any settings i should be using for the 120SR on the TX? or shall i leave everything where it is?

i really need a masterclass on this TX as my mind is fried with all the options and menus, it'll take me a year to read the manual.

does anyone have any links to info that would make my life a lot easier.

    Thanks

    Ian

Have you searched youtube? There is quite possibly someone who's gone through the same as you already.

Also, you sound a little like trying to run before you've learned to walk. Don't worry, we've all done it at some point and it's not a criticism!! To understand a lot more about heli controls on something like a Dx6i (I use one myself) you should also check out the "Finless Bob" series of videos, I learn't most of what I know about setting up heli controls from his videos.

Here are some settings from another post...

      http://www.rcheliaddict.co.uk/new-em...-120-sr-4.html

Below are my settings for SR 120 on my DX6i.
Please keep in mind that these settings are done to my liking and might not be as good for you as they are for me
      SETUP LIST
      Model Type: HELI
      Model Name: SR120HEL
      Reverse: All Normal
      Swash Type: 1 SERVO 90°
      Thro-Cut: INH
      D/R Combi: D/R SW: FM
      Timer: SWITCH: INHIBIT
      Range Check: INH
      Power Setting: B US 247

      ADJUST LIST
D/R&Expo: - Flight mode Switch on "0" (Low rates)
      Aile 0 80% +20%
      Elev 0 80% +20%
      Rudd 0 80% +20%

D/R&Expo: - Flight mode Switch on "1" (High rates)
      Aile 1 100% -20%
      Elev 1 100% -40%
      Rudd 1 100% -15%

      Travel Adj:
      All on 125%

      Sub Trim:
      All on 0

      GYRO:
      INH

      THRO CUR:
Flight mode Switch on "0" (Low rates)
      NORM POS
      POS L 0.0%
      POS 2 15%
      POS 3 50%
      POS 4 60%
      POS H 75%

Flight mode Switch on "1" (High rates)
      STUNT POS
      POS L 0.0%
      POS 2 30%
      POS 3 50%
      POS 4 75%
      POS H 100%

      PITCH CUR:
      Leave alone, unused.

      SWASH MIX:
      INH

      MIX1:
      INH

      MIX2:
      INH

      REVO MIX:
      Al on 0%

Now when your Flight Mode switch is on "0" your heli will be docile and throttle quite soft, good for indoors or for newbie mates, when you will switch to "1" everything should be twitchy, faster and more responsive. I'd play with the Expo % and Throttle curve to find your perfect balance in both Low and High rates.
I am happy with these settings as now the SR120 flies as fast as it can and feels like a big heli. Waiting for swashplate mods ..
      Notes:
      • I am sure you know, but the Flight Mode switch is the one on the top of your radio, left of the Aerial, in front of the Trainer switch
      • I keep power setting on B US because the range is supposed to be better, its irrelevant with the SR, you wont go THAT far.
      • Get a simulator! If you are going to stick to Helis I strongly reccomend reflex XTR, I tried almost all Sims and reflex is the only one that actually feels quite close to flying an RC heli, comes with Spektrum Compatible cable, I bought mine cheap off ebay (version 5.03.1), if you get it ill tell you where to get models to download for free.

Please anybody feel free to add/correct anything.

thanks, i have been searching a while now but can find nothing.

but, i am absolutley fine with the RTF TX and can fly around no problem, its not my skills lacking but a bird that wont hover without any stick input which didnt happen on the standard TX?

EDIT: Fantastic, thanks very much! now to input these and trim...thats me sorted for the rest of my day off!

A Dx6i is a programmable Tx though, flexible enough that it will cover any platform ONCE SETUP. It obviously can't cater for any particular heli out of the box. The standard Tx will be designed to perfectly suit the characteristics of the 120. The Dx6i can be programmed (perhaps following the above) to be much the same, but to use a biking analogy (I've got a gixer thou by the way ) it's a bit like saying I've bought a high flow air filter for my bike, but why isn't the bike running any better. Answer is, you need to map the rest of it to match the changed part. You've changed the Tx, now you need to tweak it's settings to match the heli

Also i would look up the settings on the 120sr manual you should have, if the same as the MSR it should have a list of recommended DX6i settings in it! And make sure your flight mode switch is on 0!

Odd that you should be having problems though, when I changed from the standard TX to the DX6i on my MSR (smaller but very similar to the 120) it actually improved the way it flew without any adjustment needed..do check the trims just in case before you start changing the other settings.. and try the old TX as well to see if it still flies well with that, in case it is crash damage that is causing the problems....

well, after an hour or so figuring out the input settings on the DX6i and a couple of new parts for the 120(new blades), it seems fine. it definitely was the trim settings, they were way off and happily i am back to where i was before, hovering and pirouetting and flying very small circuits in my living room! i must admit though the TX is far cleverer than i am at the moment but the reason i bought it was so that i can make the next step to an MCPX V2 in a few weeks once the 120SR is all but mastered.

              Thanks again.

I got my 120SR on it too and it was great. Needed very little trimming at all to be honest. Once i set a bit of expo on it it flew better than before!

I Set mine up on acro mode rather than Heli because you dont need any of the extra settings it requires (AFAIK)

There's lots of stuff to learn on helis. Reading the manual helps, bit I find trying to figure it out then read the manual even better. No need to stay stuck for long though, lots of people happy to help. We all had lots of help when we started. Bigger the heli the easier it breaks and the more it costs. Finding someone local helps as well.
