  • where to go from here?

    hi guys,
i've recently become addicted to flying again after my dad came home with an mcpx i decided to dig out my old twister cp gold, and then remembered why i stopped...

it was a mess, it needed pretty much every part replaced due to a fairly cataclysmic crash about 2 years ago...

i'm looking for something that is capable of light 3d and something that i wont grow out of too quickly, i'm leaning towards a trex 450/blade 450 3d but the only problem i have is that i think these may be a bit big for essentially a first cp heli (as i havent flown for about 2 years).

so i was veering toward a trex 250 because that's just small enough to hover indoors and is cheaper than the above 2 (i also have a 6ch tx and rx from the cp gold which still work).

the only problem i have with this is that the tx i have is 35mhz and everything nowadays seems to be 2.4ghz..also, would the tx/rx set i have at the moment be compatible with the 250?

it's just that i've gotten a bit bored of the msr now and phoenix is very good but you can only go so far on it...so please rcheliaddicts HELP ME!!

    thanks in advance,

    Josh

Buy ANOTHER MCPX V2. You can learn just about everything you need with one and they are bounceable too.
Been there and done that, but never stop learning.
Now too many Helis to mention?

      Second that.

Don't fly a 250 indoors unless the room is big and you don't value your furniture, the blades can easilly cut in to chair fabric and damage woodwork. A flat screen TV would have no chance.

There are still some original TRex 450 Pro kits around at good prices, good starting point with the rates trimmed down softer.

Josh, i'd be looking at changing the radio for a DX6i or DX7 secondhand, your current radio might work depending on how big the receiver is, but I wouldn't use it myself on a 250. I'd also be looking out for a fbl TREX 450 pro/sport. I fly Futaba and would go the 8FG route but not many come up for sale secondhand. Do you really want a 250 as your main heli as they can be very twitchy, 450 is more forgiving, 500 is better but don't know your budget, there seem to be a lot of 450's and 500's on the secondhand market though. The new X2 had a good review from Zeeflyboy on here last week as I believe he changed from his TREX 250 to one if you want this size of heli, its very new though and a tad expensive, align stuff is cheaper and it works.

I'd disagree with only being able to go so far on phoenix... It will save you thousands and while the weather is bad its perfect....

hi, thanks for all the replys guys and starting from the top, my dad's got other helicopters so i may end up inheriting the mcpx sooner rather than later..

and bikerflyer, that price looks really good, is that everything except tx/rx/batteries? if it is then that is very tempting..

niceblades, i did have a brief look at a trex 500 but the size of it scared me a bit, i think starting with a heli that big that has repair bills that big might drain my bank account as for the gaui x2 i did have a look at it but it seems very expensive for what it is.. although if it's a good heli it may be within reach..

adam, you do have a very valid point, i was talking more sortof basic stuff though, like hovering and getting back to a stable hover...

            thanks again guys

            Josh.

The X2 is expensive, but it is pure quality in all departments. But it is very powerful and runs scary head speeds with it being so small. You would definitely be able to grow with the X2. But if your skills are rusty i would avoid it as i would imagine the repair bills would be pretty big. I would get an Mcpx v2 to get back in the game. Or if you are set on something bigger then get a trex 450 pro or sport. If you are going FBL i would put a beast on it rather than the 3gx. Thats just my preference as i have both and much prefer the beast over the 3gx. I wouldn't bother with a trex 250. You will find the 450 easier to build, set up and fly. The tail on the 250 is very hard to get right and it is generally harder to fly because its smaller. The Blade 450x looks pretty good too if your just approaching the hobby in a casual fleeting way. I would think it will definitely scratch the itch for you. That also comes with the new Spektrum/Beastx rx and FBL unit which i would think is going to be very good. But there are no flight reports on this yet.

The 250 will be pretty twitchy in the beginning at least.I think the mcpx is a good idea,if you can fly one of those comfortably you can fly anything in my opinion, and try stretch to a dx7 or dx8 tx.damn this expensive hobby!

+1, Phoenix or any decent sim is a must and I feel too many people overlook there advantages, I still use mine regular to polish up if I haven't been flying for a while for one reason or another.

250 is too small and twitchy to start with
400/450 size will be more stable and also offers being able to practise hovering in the garden if big enough and isnt too itimidating to use at the local park

there is no reason why your 35mhz radio wont work on the heliproviding it has 6 channels and you need to route the aeriel carefully but other than that you should be fine until funds allow for a new TX

i flew firstly my Twister storm and then my trex 450 on 35mhz for ages, in fact most FPV fliers are moving back to 35mhz due to its superior range

and if you just want to spend some time getting into the groove again with hovering then there is no need to worry about FBL systems, its just one more thing to mess about setting up and also a further thing that can become damaged in a crash

i have also sent you a PM in response to yours
