  • Newbie thats well and truly hooked!

    Happy new year all.

i have been a member of this site a while now but never had the inclination to post, ive just been an avid reader as this site is a great place to find infomation.

My reason for finally posting is that i've finally made the leap and bought a Blade 120SR RTF as my first heli and absolutley love it!

i have never done this before and have been watching videos and friends for about a year and made the decision to go in feet first at xmas. i will say its not as easy as it looks and have spent about £25 on spares and £16 on 2 spare batteries.

i have limited space in my kitchen but can take off and hover about 5 feet high and fly around by using the right stick and "sliding" the bird left and right and turning the heli with the left stick "pirouette" i have mastered the forward and reverse flight in the tight space as well, all this with only 3 hours flight time. the onlt thing i can't do is the banked turn as i don't have the space and the high winds we have been having are stopping me from flying outside. i have got the point where i can use a full charge without putting the bird down to land, or crashing! which i am pleased with seeing as my kitchen is only 10'x10' and a standard ceiling height.

i can say that i am hooked and have today purchased a DX6i on ebay for this heli as i have been told that i will find it easier to control and can use it when i step up to the next level, which i hope to be around my birthday in May to a Blade SR.

in the meantime can i say, that this site has been great in feeding my need for info over the last 12 months and i am sure i'll be posting more over the coming year.

welcome and happy new year to you too, when the winds die down and you get outside, you will love the 120 even more and soon pick up banked turns with it, the sr is a totally different heli and i would advise you to get phoenix sim(it works with the dx6i) first and having a play, it will honestly pay for itself over and over again.

If your making good progress with the 120sr,see what its like outdoors when the wind permits as you may want to skip straight to a 400-450 size cp heli along with some sim time.I went from the 120sr straight to a blade 400,and although it was a steep learning curve at first it clicked pretty soon, and i was glad id missed out another heli inbetween and spent the money on pheonix flight sim instead.

problem with this hobby is,when your in,your in!.i quickly went from a blade 400 to a trex 550,then a 600,then a velocity 50 then a 700n all in the space of 18 months.see where im coming from? lol.get out now while you still can!

          Welcome to the forum!

+1 for the DX6i/DX7, Phoenix will save you £££s, and go for a 450 or 500. 500s are more stable and youll learn (relatively) quickly but crashes cost more!

Dont worry, take it home, fix it and get back in the air

          Good luck fella!!!

Sound like your doing fine. The 120sr is a great bird to learn fast forward flight outdoors with. If your flying in a park or filed it will take a fair few knocks without damage. The best mod you can do to the 120sr is to change the swashplate to an upgraded one. Will give you loads more cyclic and better control and drive outside. When you get your DX6i make sure your gyro switch is set for 100%. If you dont then you wont get as much travel out of your servos and hence less cyclic (this is a blade msr / 120sr thing on the 5 in 1 and bears no resemblance to the actual gyro setting!).

                Wow fantastic response guys.

I am going to be honest here and say that some of the things you mention are beyond me and it seems I need to do some Reading and learning over the coming days.

Had my first major crash indoors yesterday as the Heli got caught in its on down draught and hit the wall and snapped a blade clean in half, but other than that it was fine. It's a good job I have a spare set!

                Thanks again for the replies.

etting this along with a dx6i controller would be an excellent starting place.
the controller will also bind to your sr120 .

A couple more hours of practice and I can admit that things aren't going so well, I've managed to destroy another set of blades and the canopy! But I had the foresight to buy these before hand. Lol

But, I have managed to get up the bottle to try pirouettes, and I have a Question.

Is it normal for the Heli to descend whilst doing them? Do I have to compensate by increasing throttle? As this is what I am having to do.

                      Thanks in advance. Ian

Its very easy to push the throttle stick up or down slightly when doing piros and not notice, thats probably whats happening.

Thanks, tbh that's probably what's happening getting quite good at these now, the bird is so responsive and I love the way it snaps straight when you remove left or right pressure from the stick.
