  • Accidentally left my DX7 on overnight

I accidentally left my DX7 on overnight and the charge is completely depleted.
It has a 9.6v spektum ni-mh rechargeable pack. Have I done permanent damage to
the pack, will it recover completely after a recharge ?

charge it with a slow wall charger for 14-16 hrs and it should be ok
you may have to cycle the battery a couple of times to get it back to full charge
    don't fast charge

If you don't manage to revive it, it's no great loss. They are know for their short life span, and many others have replaced them with different sorts of batts, ie Lipos, Nimhs, Lions. I personally use an Eneloop pack (Nimh) and since it doesn't self discharge, it lasts for weeks and weeks between charges.

        Thanks guys,

I've popped it on to charge and will leave it on for 14-16 hours.

@buckers, I may follow your suggestion and replace the pack eventually as you have suggested
as it does not hold charge very well at all.

Surinder - I have a brand new battery for a JR DSX9 - just a few weeks old and never used. I am fairly sure its the same battery for a DX7. They are £32 new - you can have it for £20 posted if that helps you?? (Its a genuine JR battery)

I've done that a couple of times and the battery has always come back to full strength after a slow charge so don't worry. NiMH does not suffer the same way that LiPos do when fully discharged.

I use the HP-FT21003S Hyperion LiFePO4 9.9v 3S 2100mAh JR Transmitter Pack and 1x HP-FCBL-2EH in my DX7, lighter and lasts many weeks on a single quick charge.

I have done this a few times, i just slow charged it for an hour or so to get some mah in it again and then cycled it a couple of times and it has been fine. I'm using the standard battery as well.

Just to clarify, a few of you guys mention to cycle it a few times. Does that mean a complete discharge and charge again or just a partial discharge followed by a full 14 hour charge?

watch out, you can kill a DX7 when the battery goes dead while it's on.
I've got one that says "backup error", permanently broken.

It still turned on. I guess I must have been lucky in this instance. I'll definitely have to be more careful with it in the future.

A Nimh cell doesn't mind going flat. If you have more than one cell in series like in a DX7 you may be ok if all the cells are the same. If it was recently fully charged and fairly new this should be the case. With standard NiMhs they do self discharge fairly quickly and the older they get the quicker it happens. Often it is just one cell that is weak. If you then discharge the battery you will flatten the one weak cell before the others and unfortunately after it has gone flat it stops being a normal cell and gets charged in the opposite direction by the other cells. When this happen the cell can go short circuit caused by growths across the inside of the cell. These can be removed by charging, especially fast charging as the charge current will burn them away. Whether or not that weak cell will be reliable is difficult to know. You may be lucky. But I would check the battery charge after leaving it a while or you might find that you have seven charged cells and one flat cell when you switch on the tx. There is only about 0.1V difference between a fully charged cell and one that is nearly empty.
