  • crashed .. now servo not working right..

ok, so i thought id give my heli a try.. smashed it on my first outing, i was just setting the trims, not really trying to hover or anything as im a newby, the thing tipped over at one point ( about half throttle, and i seem to have dammaged the rear servo that hooked upto the swash plate, sometomes it dosent respond and if i lightly press on it, it clicks.. other times it seems to go up and down ok..
the problem was the flybar was caught up on the main blades,
i donk know how to fix or even diagnose this.. and help appreciated
the servo now seems stick, and its easy to move by hand..
    rob.

Rob it sounds to me like you have stripped the gears inside the servo , what make is it and the number, this is a common thing don't worry .

      Hi
you have not said which Heli you have?
but anyway it sounds like you have stripped a plastic gear in the servo, they are easy to repair.
you can buy new replacement servo gears for whatever servo you have, there are 4 small screws at the back of the servo to undo and the servo spline at the front,
then the cover should come off to reveal the gears. Just make sure you add a small amount of grease to the new ones.
also check your main shaft hasn't bent it does not take much too cause a nasty wobble.
      good luck

Sounds like you've broken some gear teeth in the servo itself. This is a common problem, and repairable.
The cheapest option is to change the gear teeth yourself.
Get used to it, it goes with repairing the heli in alot of crashes.

If I read your other post correctly, an hour ago this heli wasn't even set up correctly with the radio and you were off to watch the Finless videos?

You may need to slow down and get some local help or this is going to become a slow, expensive and frustrating process.

You are going to need some help to get the heli fixed and set-up correctly before you attempt to even power it up again.

Is there anyone local to you that can help?

yeah, i broke it.. just the teeth on a servo.. they look like rubbish servos inside , i need better ones any suggestions ?

im not sure why im getting a hard time if it is as common to break teeth as they say...
i know i need local help, but no one has come forward in my area, there is a club but its quite far away and only on sundays..
im not an idiot, im just new..i doubt many people in my position could resist trying the heli out.. as i said it was just to check the swash plate settings i made and adjust the trim...
no offence if i sound a tad deffensive, but im a bit ticked off due to the misshap rob

Hi rob just to add when you do strip the servo watch the order and position of the gears , it's quite common for the output gear (the one with the splines the servo horn fits to) to be aligned with a cut out in the underside of the case .

              Good luck

You are not getting a 'hard time', would have been a very different post if that was the intention

You are standing at the top of a very slippery slope though and what you do will make the difference between enjoying the hobby as we would all want you to do and getting frustrated and end up wasting a lot of money in the process, making sure the heli is completely set up correctly before spinning the blades is a really important step so resisting a quick try is helpful as it only take a split-second for it to go bad.

The servo gears are the bit that is damaged that you have noticed, it may not be the only damaged part though and the rest are not easy to spot when you are just getting started in the hobby.

You say the flybar was caught up in the blades, so you will want to check the blades for any cracks or other damage depending on what they are made of. You'll want to check the flybar, feathering shaft and main shaft are all straight.

You may find the servo itself is damaged, not just the gears, but don't be tempted to just replace the one servo with something different (if it needs it) the three cyclic servos should really be a the same type to avoid differences in travel and speed.

Check the ball-links and rods on the head as well just in case anything got dislodged, cracked or bent.

I'm sure people here will help as much as they can, but it is probably worth finding out more about your local club even if they do only fly once a week.

Rob I think you really need to get to a club and get your Heli checked over, there is a club in Glenrothes, one in Falkirk, one in cumbernauld plus waterfoot all available for you to pop along. I'm not entirely sure about in Edinburgh but it doesn't have to be a Sunday for you to come to waterfoot, like most clubs, Sunday's are the day that most people fly on so that's the official club day where you will normally be guaranteed someone will be there (weather & fly in permitting) there is a few members of the club on this forum that if you start a thread or pm might be able to meet you during the week. We do fly on a Saturday when we can as well most weeks. If you start a thread I'm sure between us we can get you sorted out
