You can pick up some very good gyros second hand if you want to keep the price down, just steer clear of the Align 780 its very sensitive to vibrations - the Align 750 works very well as do the Futaba and Spartan Gyros...

Hunt around for either an Align 750 or the Spartan 760

      Hello mate
      What helis are they for?
For smaller helis up to 450 size the Assan GA-250 is a great performer, dirt cheap. From HK.
I know some people also use it on larger helis, not sure I'd trust it on my 600 though, but only because its so cheap.

i would be thinking long term here are you gonna stay flybared or go flybarless ?? also think about buying second hand as cheep gyros are not really very good and are not gonna help your cause especially if your learning to fly !
look for second hand spartan quarks or ds760's or an align gp750 or perhaps a csm 720 if you plan to go flybarless in the future a beastx can be used as a tail gyro only untill you decide to go fully flybarless

also i have a spartan quark if your interested

Got a Quark from here in the for sale section. Really worth it. Easy to setup and just works. Agree with millerman above... if going to go flybarless then may be worth investing in a unit that can be used as a tail gyro now.

I tend to use 401's easy to set up and never had a problem thus far (Am I doomed now?)

Nothing wrong with 401's good strong basic gyro. a good one to start out with.

If I were looking for second hand gyro, the spartan 760 must be a good one to look at now gyros have moved on and even Spartan has bought out the quark range they have got to be good value, fantastic gyro, and second hand prices have got to make them attractive.
              All the best

Best to look and see what spartan and fut gyros you can find for a good price. with the rush to FBL there have been some good deals about.

The only reason i wouldn't recommend a 401 is because you can get better gyro's for similar or better money. The 401 was a good gyro in it's day though. I would say a spartan (either quark or ds760) would last you a long time. They can be had for a fair price if you look around for them

Depends on what style of flying you intend doing at the end of the day .. The best for piro consistency is the csm 720 .. I have used 401's and spartans and they just feel whippy on the models I have used them on .. The 720 is the only gyro I keep going back to.

Futaba 520 is a good unit.

The CSM, Spartans are also very good.

The gyro fitted in the Blade 450 sounds good at under £40. It's a mems unit. Secondhand Futaba 401s are very stable and easy to use. The Phoenixtech GT9 has had good comments as well. Was available under £40. The GT9 sounds the best bet for 3D if you are buying new. Good Gyros are cheaper than they used to be.

Depends on what you want to learn. Cheaper gyros are usually ok in rate mode and that's not a bad way to learn. They tend to drift a bit in heading hold and can scare the cr*p out of you as if you don't know what you're doing they can make the heli spin through 180 as it takes off. Some are worse than that and have rusty bolts inside them to make them seem better. Temperature change is the big killer on cheap gyros in heading hold. The cold as well is another in both rate and heading hold. Anything below 10C. I would certainly stick to rate mode until you can hover long enough to worry about drift. A good gyro and heading hold does make things easier, especially in variable wind. If you must use a cheap gyro make sure the heli has been at the same temperature for about 10 minutes before using it.
