  • hi guys an old newbie????

well i started with helis about 20 years ago with a morley maverick. i crashed it second time out and gave it up as a bad job. got myself into off road nitro buggies and have realy enjoyed the hobby. well i am now 40 and would like to try and get back into heli's so i have got myself a trex 450 and a the reflex xtr simulator. i havn't yet had the nerve to fly the heli but i am getting better on the sim (sort of i can now hover in a fairly small area for about 2 mins without crashing). i should imagine a few more hours on the sim should see me confident enough for the real thing. i am based in leeds so was wondering if anyone flies in my area as i would love to bob along and see how it should be done, also i might be able pick up a few bits of usefull info.

      Hi Chris, and welcome.

Sim flying is time well spent - as long as your own model is setup to behave something like the sim. Are you familiar with setting up throttle/pitch curves? Having someone to 'oversee' that side of things can be useful, and a flyable heli will make the learning process easier than with a (unintentionally) badly set-up one.

I'm sure there are a few northern members, so watch this space for offers of help

      Cheers - Rob

thanks for the kind welcome from you chaps. i have a fairly good understanding of setting up the heli. i understand the principles of pitch and throttle curves and negative and posative pitch. i havnt set up the heli yet but will be soon. i have a sanwa rd6000 sport radio wich only has a 3 point curve, but that should be fine for learning the basics. i was thinking to start of only having a small amount of negative pitch say -2 deg. do you guys have any good set ups for a newbie like me.

            Hi Chris

You're definitely on the right track there with -2deg or so of -ve pitch. 0deg minimum (which some set up to) always seems to cause heli's to 'float' on landing. A bit of negative helps bring them back down.

            Cheers - Rob
