  • New to the hobby - And a few mCX2 question

    Good afternoon,

I purchased my first helicopter yesterday. I ended up going with mCX2 which was recommended to me by the chap at the local store. I've done a fair amount of research too and I feel that I made the right choice. I've only have the little heli since yesterday and left me tell you I am having so much fun! I'd like to get to the bigger birds in future. So, the mCX2 is the first stepping stone on my way. I am doing all sorts of exercises, mainly hoovering and going left and right with hoovering at certain points and landing in predetermined landing spots. I can see that I am already getting better which is encouraging. I really want to use this little heli as a learning tool. I think I should move on mSR and then to mCP X as my skills develop before going any bigger. I plan to purchase a proper transmitter in next few days. I think the DX6i would be the ideal one from what I was told and found on the internet. What do you reckon, would it be the right choice for all these small helis and perhaps the larger once too? It might be a bit premature for me to think about all these other helis but it is just me, I like to have things lined up. Bit of OCD I guess Now, I have a question about the trim. Would I be right to think that trim goes off as the battery discharges? I find that the mCX2 flies better with a fresh battery and there comes more drift the longer I fly. Also, being pretty new to the hobby I suppose having different sizes of batteries have its effect on the trim as well. Or does it? What I mean to say is that I have 1 stock 120 mAh and 4 extra 175 mAh batteries which are slightly larger. I find that mCX2 flies well when trimmed with the larger batteries but spins and drifts a lot with the smaller battery in (without adjusting the trim which works well with the larger batteries). I currently fly using the lower sensitivity settings on my transmitter. I find it easier and less stressful. I intent to go to the other more sensitive settings once I master the very basics. Is this the right way about it? I don't want to develop any wrong habits. I understand this could be a very personal thing but could anyone with experience offer their view on this, please? I'm a bit uncertain about the flight time when using the 175 mAh batteries. What should I expect? I understand that the 5in1 unit has the LVC which has came into play about two or three times when using the stock 120 mAh battery but never for the 175 mAh. I remember reading that it is not advisable to take it to the LVC point every time, so, I am trying to establish how long it is safe and advisable to fly. Could you please advise me? There are a few more things on my mind I am afraid. I understand that the swashplate has two settings. When should I be looking to step it up? I guess once I have all the basics mastered but I could be wrong. Again, this could well be very personal but what do you think? I've ordered lots of spares with anticipation of future mishaps. Amongst these is the Carbon Fibre Tail Boom with Fin. If I understand it correctly, it makes the heli more nimble. Again, when to upgrade this? I hope I haven't completely alienate you with all these questions. I will greatly appreciate any feedback. Thank you for your time

This is summary of all those questions:
(I told you about my mild OCD, didn't I )

    1. transmitter - is the DX6i the right one to get for mCX2 and the other mentioned birds or is there any other one I should look at?

    2. battery and trim - does the trim or steadiness of heli change as the the battery discharges?

    3. battery size and trim - does the battery size have an effect on the trim when using say the stock 120 mAh and larger 175 mAh? (I guess it does as I can see it and feel it but I want to get to actually understand it)

    4. flight time - what sort of flight time should I expect using 175 mAh batteries?

    5. dual rate - is using the less sensitive settings to begin with a good thing in a long run?

    6. swashplate settings - when is it a good time to step it up to more aggressive settings?

    7. boom with Fin - does it improve the flight characteristic and when should I look into installing this upgrade?

    8. anything else - I know, I know, way too many questions and I do apologise but if there is anything else you think I could find useful what not to share it

Once again, thank you so much for your patience with me. I'll be a good student, I promise

    Hi mate,
    dx6i- yes
don't run the batteries out if you can help it, usually 3-4 mins is enough
i wouldn't bother messing too much with this heli, ie upgrades, and aggressive settings, wait till you get the msr and mcpx
    enjoy!
    cheers

As above basically you can't go wrong with the dx6i, higher capacity lipos are ok with the mcx2 but don't go over 130mah for a msr; Hyperion are the best bar none; the eflite ones are no where near as good.
Don't fully discharge batteries, and don't leave the fully charged for too long - the will soon die! Let the motor cool down between flights, it will last longer.
Biggest thing enjoy it, all the best

Thank you chaps, I appreciate you taking a time to respond. I bought the CX6i and I'm loving it. It's a whole new ballgame. I finally feel that I'm in control. I can already understand why messing about with the settings on this heli isn't going to make much difference. I did change the swashplate to the faster settings and I guess it's more or less it. I practise a lot and I can honestly say I see good improvements. I'm already doing circles and eights. They aren't perfect but compared to day 1.... I intent to keep on practicing with the mCX2 until I feel I really mastered it. The next purchase will be a simulator. Which one to get? I keep on seeing the Phoenix being mentioned. Is it the one to get? I was told that a new version of mSR is due soon, so it might just work out that I'd upgrade to that if it's as good as the guy in my local hobby shop suggested. Will see, it doesn't really matter at the moment. I am awaiting a delivery of a few spares and I will change the body kit to carbon fibre boom with a fin. I think that it will allow me to balance the heli better. I bought these 175 mAh batteries and they are a tad longer, so the centre of gravity shifted. I hope to correct it with the little weight on the boom. Am I making sense here or am I just talking nonsense? As I said, I am a complete noob when it comes to RC. Is there any reason why Darwill suggested not going over 130 mAh? Lastly, would anyone have settings for the DX6i I could use? Many thanks.

I advised not to go over 130's because of the c of g shift, as an alternative you can space off the end of the battery that butts up to the frame I use a cable tie on the battery (loose fit). I have posted settings for the dx6i for the msr / mcx / mcx2, it's titled 'msr + dx6i = indoor heaven' search for that title and look down my posts and you'll find them.

            Darwil,

Thanks for your help mate. It makes a lot of difference to me and I appreciate you taking time to respond. I weighted the 175 mAh batteries and concluded that they are approximately 1.2g heavier compared to the stock battery. I found this youtube video in which the guy off sets the landing skid using those spare grommets over the little pins. He then glued it to the main frame. Well, I wasn't to keen on the idea of using an adhesive. I used a small bit of PTFE tape over the pins before pushing the skid to the main frame. It has a nice and strong fit. There is enough space to slide the battery further in hence balancing the C of G without hitting the gears. I am very happy with this. I am still waiting for a delivery of those spares. It seems that our lovely Royal Mail lost it or nicked it. I will swap to boom with a fin and balance it properly with the little weight on it. Can't wait for it to finally arrive. This new hobby of mine is really super addictive
