  • Idle up -an explination

As my flying is progressing quite well , i am more and more thinking about the time when i finaly hit the IU switch . So could someone please explain in basic terms what exactly will happen to the heli when i hit this switch for the first time . Do i need to be in a hover of a certain height ? , why do most peeps hit the deck the first time (how do i avoid this) . Sorry for all the noobish questions but im still at a loss as how to make the heli go inverted .

It all depends on what you are flying and how Idle up is set to how it will react when you switch to it. I first went Idle up with my Twister Storm 3D in June. It only has one idle up not two. I now don't bother with the first type of Idle up 1 which usually has a TICK Throttle curve. I just have 80% or 85% straight across on the Throttle curve (Electric). It would make more sense to have a TICK Throttle curve on a Nitor unless a Governor was used.
So, to what will happen and do you need to be hovering? In a nutshell, if you have Electric? You will most likely have a SOFT start? So switching to Idle up 1 or 2 from Normal at middle throttle will not do much if the Pitch and Throttle curves are matched in the middle.
When you get into a hover in Idle up, the Heli will be a little more responsive and going past middle to lower throttle will bring the Heli down MUCH faster than it did in normal when it would probably float down. Go for it. It really IS no big deal and it is then possible to move onto bigger and better things. Happy flying.
Been there and done that, but never stop learning.
Now too many Helis to mention?

Unless you have setup idle up curves for pitch and throttle then probably nothing will happen, it might even drop out of the air. What your looking to do is set pitch and throttle curves I am assuming for inverted flight. If you have a hover pitch setup on your current Tx at 3/4 throttle then your well set, you now need a straight line pitch curve and a V curve for your throttle if nitro and a straight line if your leccy. Let me have a little more info about your current setup and I'll/we'll try to help out with something sensible.

I have a twister 3d at the moment , but the heli that i will have when im ready to invert will be electric / 550e size (probably FBL) and the TX will be DX6i .......thx

Exactly the same as me, although I got a S/H Trex 600E before the 550E. The 550E FBL with 3G was my third. Love it to bits and flies LOADS better than the 600E FB or the 550E FB. Just my opinion.

Before you know it you will doing Loops, Flips, Rolls, 540 Stall Turns, Loops with Piros on top, INVERTED hover and then INVERTED FORWARDS flight. WHo knows where it will end? Having said that, I come from an Aerobatic Plank background, so I LIKE nice smooth manouvres.

You can have the performance in positive pitch exactly the same for normal and idleup. This is ok for electric. You only need to change the negative pitch side. So if you change from normal to idleup anytime the stick is above halfway there will be no difference. It is also easy to check you are in idle up by moving the stick below half way and seeing if the revs die. You could switchon in idleup and rely on the esc slow start but I don't do that. I'd rather not rely on the esc doing something if I don't have to.

                  Hi Wilo,

It's well worth having a look at Finless Bob's video series over on Helifreak. YOu'll have to register to see the videos but well worth it in my opinion. One of the videos is called 'Curves 101' he explains in depth how to set the curves and why you need them set the way you do.

I've watched that particular video myself a few times this weekjust to really make sure I've set my TX (DX6i) correctly.

                  Hope it helps mate
